Help starting saw

Hi All,

I purchased a Husky 353 based on the recommendations presented here.

I now have the saw and can't get it to start. I have followed the instructions listed in the owners manual and have had no luck. I'm wondering if there is some secret voodoo incantation that I'm supposed to recite or ?????

Any possibly ideas or help for this nooby would be appreciated.

OK, while this is not betond the realm of possibility for something I may have forgotten, in this instance I did not forget. Fresh 50:1 mix of 93 octane and Husky oil.

Did the dealer show you how to start it before you left the shop?

Send it to me, I'll fire it up and send it back running. Fed-ex might get it there before it runs out of fuel.

Full choke, crank until it burps and tries to start, choke off, fast idle, crank it again. Should start in a pull or two. If not, take it back to the dealer and ask him to show you. If it won't start, get a new one. Or did you mail order it?

I read your bio. What kind of retrievers do you work with? I'm a lab guy, and have been since before labs were cool. I've got a pointing chocolate female now, and have a black male pup in MO that I'll be picking up in a few weeks.

Not to sound mean, but have you flipped the on off switch to on? Are you fetting fire to the plug?

Put it back in the box and bring it back, then stop at local Stihl Dealer and get another saw. Could not resist that one.

Now to start your saw if you choose to keep it, is the switch on? Most new saw owners forget to release choke after saw burps and end up with a flooded carb and plug. Pull out the spark plug and see if its wet with mix, dry it off and check for spark, don't hold plug in your hand. If you have spark put the plug back in, and try to start saw, few pulls with choke until you hear it spit, then choke off. Make sure you have chain brake on while you trying to start it. If this does not work, bring it to dealer where purchased and let him start it. If you bought it new from big orange box store and no one started it before leaving the store with it, return it. If you insist on getting this model find a servicing dealer and buy the saw there. They will start it and adjust carb before handing it over to you. Good luck.

I will try to cover all the ??s here. It is a new saw bought from Bailey's. I checked with both local dealers, neither of which seemed to know that a 353 model existed and didn't act particularly interested in getting my business so....

Jeff's post quoted above and Dadatwins post address a shortcoming on my part as I've typically started machines(trimmers etc...) with choke on and then switched off after running for a few seconds. I did get one burp, but didn't de-choke immediately. Must have flooded it. I will pull the plug, dry and try again tomorrow.

I have 2 black lab ?????es. One just turned 6 and the other is ~14 months old. I train to run Field Trials and hunt a bit. They are awesome animals.

Yeager31 after you get the plug back in, set the chain brake put it to choke pull it till you get a burp then put it on high idle the saw should start in a couple/three pulls after that, once it starts hit the trigger and it will drop to idle.

Yup Yeager31 you flooded it, after it burps push the choke in, after that it should start in 1 or 2 pulls, when you do get the saw started let it warm up at idle for about 30 sec. One thing you should know when the saw is warm remember not to use the choke, it should start with one pull when warm.

NOt trying to be an ahole either but make sure switch on left of saw right
above blue choke pull is pushed all the way up,blue choke pulled out,squeeze
throttle pull rope 2 or 3 times or util it tries to start.Push blue choke in and
with finger still squezzing throttle 1 or 2 more pulls and she should start,
if not send it back. I just bought a new 353 Friday and have forgotten kill
switch twice now!

By "lab?????es", do you mean labradoodles? Are they running those dogs in trials now?

No need to squeeze the throttle while starting, when you pull out the choke it also sets high idle, when saw is running squeeze tthe throttle to disinguadge high idle.

As he said, but don't pull more than 3 to 4 times with choke on, even if it fails to burp in those pulls. Then push the blue choke in, but be sure that you don't push the red kill swich down at the same time.

By the way, over here no-one is allowed to sell a Husky saw without starting it and checking carb adjustment/max rpm first.

Well thank God!!! I almost lost respect for you as a dog handler! I read the other day that people nowadays are marketing labradoodles as true hunting dogs and people are paying big money for them, and they're the cool, urban yuppie thing to have. Not to offend anyone here with a 'doodle, but it's just hard for us lab guys to buy into this new, trendy breed.

And yes, the MO dog is a pup, he's pure lab as well. He's got a trials grandfather, but both parents are non competitive hunting dogs. And I don't do trials, so I see this as a great combination of dog for me- trials quality in the bloodline, but hunting dog demeanor.

And back to the thread so we don't get off the theme- yeah, just don't crank it too much with choke on, or you'll have more fuel than you'll need. As soon as it burps, or even before, choke off and crank some more. If it don't start in a few pulls, it wasn't choked enough, or something's wrong with the saw.
