I'm new to the forum, and in need of help. I have an Echo CS400 and a problem. I was putting on a new bar and chain earlier and somehow managed to snap off one of the guide bar studs. How the heck to you get these things out?? I've looked online at parts schematics and the replacement stud is a press in...has a square head. So the disassembly began but the further I got, the more I realized that it doesn't appear that the case can be split. If the studs back out, they should enter the bar oil reservoir but in looking into the tank, there is no provision in the housing. So I was thinking maybe they are thread in studs but no amount of vice grip twisting or trying to back them out using jam nuts will work. I am at a complete loss and hoping that someone here has replaced these before and can lend a word of advice....any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!
The old stud should punch out into the oil tank. If you can't get it that way, there are a number of tank/chassis assemblies on fleabay for about $35 and some of your time. I'd advise a clutch tool for this job too.

You must've really been torquing the hell out of it.
No kidding!! Guess the gym's been paying off...sitting on by butt in the living room and twisted it in half. Then looking at the old stud...well it hadn't broken yet but is was clear that it was stretched to the point that it's days were numbered.

As it turns out, finding the new studs required calls all over town and some leg work to keep from having a 4-5 day wait and $12 in shipping. I finally got a hook-up at an Echo distributor who also was able to print me off a couple pages from the Echo service manual (thanks Aaron!!). You were absolutely right, they do just punch out. What threw me off was that the head of the stud was not visible in the oil tank. The aluminum housing for the studs is cast into the plastic of the case. Punching them out breaks out a 1/2" x 1/2" square of plastic and reveals a portion of the aluminum housing. Fish out the plastic and the old studs (I went ahead and replaced both), a little press fit retaining compound (Loctite 675 or equivalent), set the new studs and I am back in business. No need to remove the clutch. Thanks for the help guys.

I scanned and uploaded the service manual pages in case someone else comes across this.

Having a heck of time figuring this one out. My CS-400 has a couple chowdered bar studs. The parts catalog shows the square head bar studs and many say just punch them out into the oil tank. The inside of my oil take appears to be reinforced right where the studs would come out. Are those rectangles with the circles break away areas? Or would I end up shattering the tank if I drive them out?

Thank you,
Jeff
