Our farm is approximately 90 acres and has become quite overgrown since my grandfather passed away years ago. There is no homestead on the property, I simply use the land for hunting and firewood. I would like to thin the property of some of the undergrowth and a good bit of the hardwoods. I'm sure this is the place to receive some sound advice on the process. Are there logging companies that would come in and remove the trees? Do they pay me for the wood? Do I pay them? Who should I contact for a service of this sort? Any information on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Hey Hill,

The attached brochure is from Connecticut, but it supports much of what has been said in previous REPS. Take good care of your land! Good Luck.

Again, the key is to get a private licensed forester, who will upon inventorying and determining a management plan for the stand, put the the timber determined to be cut out to bid. In PA it is not uncommon to have 20-30 logging and sawmills bid on the timber. This approach has all but eliminated the previously numerous instances of land owners being completely taken advantage of. I am aware of instances where this has resulted in land owners receiving 2x-4x for their timber and one where, on a 380 acre stand, a logging outfit offered an naive landowner who was in need of cash $39K for a cut. After seeking out a licensed forester, under the urging of a family friend, sold the cut for $280K. The industry being discussed is one which historically has had the reputation of having numerous practitioners lacking even the slightest of scruples. What ever the cost, the private licensed forester should easily earn their fee. If you can get free advise from a County or State or other regional official, start there, then, before you make any agreements to sell or cut anything, seek out the professional services of a private licensed forester.
