i only have one pic sorry. we i ended up borrowing my friends husky 390xp with a 32 inch bar and a carlton chain set up. i got my husky stuck in the tree on the back cut so i finished it with the bigger XP saw.
this is me climbing up to set a rope in the tree to keep it from falling back onto the power lines behind the photo.

so did you climb the rope up after you sat the tree down on the saw?:(

either way, that's what throwlines are for, I see some EASY crotches.

i wanted to climb the tree first so that i could tie a timber hitch on the crotch with my rigging line. i didn't want it slipping off if the tree came down the wrong way. timber hitches sinch down on the crotch and i find it is better then a bowline for dead tree applications.

anyways, i didn't want to finish cutting with my little husky even after i got it out by applying tension to the rigging line. i just used the bigger saw to finish the cuts. i now understand how important it is to have a 60-80cc saw. lessons learned!

Glad you had resources to a larger saw to get the tree down as planned.

Using the 390xp on that trunk has to have you looking towards a larger saw for future jobs. With the smaller saw for the limbs.

right now my eyes are on the dolmar 7900 or the stihl ms 361. the husky is a bit too pricey for me these days.

Big difference in HP between the 361 and the 7900. Both are nice saws.

At work we tend to grab the 441's over the 361's.

I own my own 7900, running 20" and 28" bars. Great saw with no real problems, I keep her filter clean and chain sharp. Like it better than the 650's we have at the company I am working for.

What type of saddle are you using in the pics.?

Vox I am not sure if you understood exactly what Treeslayer meant. I have added a few badly drawn pics below to illustrate.

1st you throw OVER the tree. It doesnt really matter where the throw line goes as long as it passes over a crotch that is 2/3 up the tree. Passing over more than 1 limb increases your safety factor especially on dead or dying wood.

2nd attach your tag line as shown and pull it through the tree remembering to give it a little tug just below crotches so the joining knot "pops" through.

3rd Tie off the tagline with your knot of preference. Timber hitch is good but you can use any regular running knot like a bowline or a figure 8.

Remember to tie the knot opposite to your scarf so it is on the top of the trunk when it falls.

Hope this is useful for future trees.
