Has anyone ever experienced an injury to the face from a chainsaw kicking back. My 19 yr old son has just experienced one and I'm at a loss of how to help him heal from it. He ended up with both his lips cut in half and had to get reçonstructed surgery. He has 200+ stitches

I've worked with two guys this has happened to, just be aware that it may look awful at the moment as the swelling will be dreadful but the face is very good at healing and he will come through this ok 👍 besides, when it comes to the face, surgeons these days are at the top of their game and no one goes home ugly 👍 sending best wishes for a speedy recovery, kind regards and best wishes,Toby.

Happened to a friend about 40 years ago , no permanent damage other than scars. He grew a beard and mustache, you would never know. I would not recognize him without the the beard or mustache, some 30 years later.

This is a great post.
Things really do look much worse than they are until the swelling goes down. I won't go into too much detail but I have known a few people who had extreme facial trauma. Much worse than what you are describing from your son. One was a bear attack, one was a chainsaw accident, one was a very beautiful young lady who was in a near fatal car accident. In the first two cases, the result after surgery is near miraculous.

Becky, I think you will relate most to the case of the young lady in particular. She was about 16-17 at the time. A girl so beautiful you couldn't help but smile just to look at her. Vibrant and cheerful, a treasure to her parents. She was nearly killed in a dreadful car accident. The injuries to her face in particular were quite extensive. I think for her parents, this was a nightmare very much like what you are experiencing today. I am happy to tell you that after a few surgeries, you would never believe that anything had happened to her at all. I can tell you this with certainty because she is a relative of mine. Imagine you run into a cousin at the grocery store. Someone you had not seen for a year or so. You ask, "so what have you been up to lately?", and she tells you this harrowing ordeal. You can't help but scan her face and neck and there is not a single blemish, not a trace of her terrible injuries. And despite the trauma, she is still as vibrant and cheerful as ever.

God bless you and your son, Becky.

In my youth, steam pipe burns were my favorite injury and would heal in days. Simple cuts took twice as long. After years of Prednisone for various issues, healing/ scarring is a totally different story. Older, experienced oral surgeons/ plastic surgeons are your best source of advice. Some phone shopping/ referrals maybe best approach. If he is young/ healthy, outcomes will be much better. Prayers for his best outcomes. My dad, now deceased, was an oral surgeon during/ after WW2.

Thank you so much for replying and sharing these stories. My son wakes up in so much pain and gets mad at us easily when we're just trying to help him get through this tragedy in his life and really tends to hurt my feelings alot.

Thank you for sharing this story. Makes me feel a little better but don't know what to do to help him through the pain he's experiencing. The more I try and help the more irritated he seems to get and hurts my feelings alot

So I just back off and let him deal with it and makes me feel like a bigger p.o.s. because I can't seem to even talk to him sometimes.

Thank you. He's just blinks n so much pain and no parent can barely to watch their child be in so much pain and he tends to really hurt my feelings when all I'm trying to do is help him.

As parents, we would trade places with a hurt child in an instant. I am sure he doesn't mean to hurt your feelings. It's not just the pain. He is probably very scared right now. He is probably replaying the event over and over in his mind and he is lashing out in frustration. Be strong for him. Be his advocate with the medical treatments. He is alive, that's what matters most.

I think I can relate to your son’s “anger”. It’s kinda a pride thing….. “I messed up and knew better!” Or the “I’m invincible” thing. We all have done things we shouldn’t have but got lucky and nothing major happened. We could just kick our own behind. Just be patient, once the pride is healed, he will be back to normal. Don’t think that he is mad at yall for helping, his pride hurts and evertime you help it makes him think again of the incident.
Father help this young man heal both physically and mentally. Also give his parents patients to help him in healing and to understand what’s happening. In Jesus Name AMEN!
