Hi,
I live on a little island off the west coast of BC, Canada. I heat with wood and use a Husky Rancher 455 and a Milwaukee electric saw as my main firewood saws (I mostly burn deadfall) but milling with that little Husky is not at all fun. I recently bought an old Stihl 051AV to use as a milling saw but it isn't running at present so I am about to learn a lot about it and hopefully end up with a good powerful milling saw.

they are long on tourque, same saw as an 075 smaller cyl
there are almost hidden carb block screws, and lot of small
gaskets.lock tight is your friend

Thanks for the feedback. What do you mean by "carb block screws"? I did start disassembling it yesterday so as to do some ignition troubleshooting and the gasket between the carb and air filter 'plate' was in about 5 pieces (looked like previous owner put the gasket together like a jigsaw puzzle). Today I'll take off the muffler so I can confirm piston and cylinder look good (what I can see through the carb looks OK). Previous owner said it ran last summer but then stopped due to lack of good spark. He tried a new coil and new module but now there is no spark at all. Anyhow, I am debating between just getting the ignition working and hoping for the best or maybe strip the whole thing down and check everything. I've rebuilt car engines in the the past and a few 2 cycle lawn mower engines about 35 years ago but never worked on a chainsaw other than a carb swap (although I have got fairly decent at sharpening chains in the last couple of years, since we moved away from the big city).

I believe the right side carb to the bakelight block is concealed
sounds as though you,ve found it. the muffler bolts are behind the
sheet metal shroud iirc.

thanks again!

Good news - I got a good strong spark by using a combination of the new coil the previous owner had bought but putting the old Stihl electronic chip back in place (PO had replaced both coil and electronic chip thing but that combo yielded no spark whatsoever. Now though I am wondering about a couple of other things. The bar looks burned as though it was run with no chain oil but yet the oil tank is full. I need to prove to myself the oiling system is working well. I suppose once I get it running with no bar on it I should be able to see oil squirting or at least dripping out of where the bar mounts - any other way to check this.
Also, the drive sprocket at the clutch looks fairly worn but I have no idea if it has life left in it or needs immediate replacement. I am planning to buy a new bar and chain as I plan to mill and want at least a 32" bar so I don't want to mess up a nice new chain with a worn out drive sprocket. I'll attach a photo and maybe you can let me know how it looks to you.
PS - bar/chain is .404 / .063 and drive sprocket has 7 teeth
