Be Careful

Be Careful guys! These saws are great i got one that has 50lbs for compression!. If they let you, you may want to test em.

Question for all of you with the 6400. Has anyone succesfully completed the big bore upgrade? If so who's kit did you go with? Are the parts used in the kit the same quality as oem? I just figured if i have to tear it apart i may do the big bore upgrade. Or should i just stick with oem for reliability

I went Thursday to get one and none were up but I scored a almost new plug aerator for $775! I told the guy to call me on a package deal for all 4 plus a concrete saw. Waiting for the call.

Well I stopped by my HD yesterday and they had one that needed a P&C, so the mechanic said:monkey:
It was complete ,minus bar and chain, When I got it home pulled muffler and noticed No ring:dizzy:
I went ahead and pulled cylinder and decomp valve had a chunck of carbon wedged in it:confused:+
Piston and cylinder looked fine put another ring on back together, cleaned decomp valve cranked on second pull
Out the Door for 75.00:givebeer: Just don't hate me:hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange: I think I will go visit them again in a couple of weeks:cheers:

When ya go back to check on any more basket cases, make sure to leave thier "Mechanic" a sixer of guy flowers... (Bud Light usually works) and a business card.

The nearest HD to me with rentals has a waiting list 5 pages long.

Mate, I'll have to remember "guy flowers" and I reckon they'd even work with the gay blokes I know, but they'd demand a boutique brew or they'd throw a hissy fit

A Gift

Dinger- I am going ot give it to my Buddy who has let me park my trailer, boat and golf cart on his land for the last 4 months.
The park where I normally keep it has been mostly under water since the middle of Oct. or the road going in has had up to 3' of water on it.

He is the kind of friend that won't take money for helping some one out, but I do know that he needs a REAL saw,:chainsaw: not the refubished POS from NT that he was thinking of getting. I am going to get a new bar and chain for it and take it to him this weekend, if it is not raining again:cry:

As for the "Man Flowers" a glass bottle of " Kentucky Spring Water" has already been dispensed:cheers::cheers:

Hello all. I've been lurking here for a while doing research on getting a new saw. One of the area stores has a couple of Makitas for sale for around $235 each. Coupons and price are negotiable. They are both 3 years old and rented 78+/- times for a total of 100 days. Both seem to have taken a beating on the covers and leak bar oil more than I've seen. I'm not 100% confident about these after seeing examples of much cleaner saws, but wouldn't mind taking the plunge. I'm mechanically inclined, but haven't done much small engine work.

My impression from the rental manager is that these saws just got new $5 chains slapped on them with each rental, and nothing else was ever done to them (total repairs equaled about $400, i.e. 80 rentals x $5). I guess I'll go back and see how far they are willing to break it down and comp. test.

Were there any HD Makitas that you've seen that were just to ragged out and you walked away from them?

HD Makita

Yes I looked at one I would't give $75 for and it was a complete running saw.

I also paid $75. for a "parts saw" that needed decomp cleaned and a $6 piston ring.

If they will let you pull mufler, do a compression test all the better. They all have scars/marks and HD name and #,s on them.

Look at the rubber isolation mounts between tank and crankcase. also pull bar cover and look for obvious chain throws.

Look at muffler for really bad dents, and check chain brake band for "blueing" ran with brake on.

Also if they will let You pull starter cover and look at flywheel condition for scrapes etc.

If You are planning on doing a 79/84 conversion then the cosmetics would probably be a bigger concern.
If You are planning on installing Heavy duty air filter, about $70.00 ,the plastic cover in black runs about $16-18, to keep looking the same.

I still don't think You can find a used saw for the price to compare.

Also tell them to take $15-20 OFF and let them keep the POS chain and bar.
Hope this helps.

$235 for a beat 'kita is too much. There are better deals out there. You can buy a new one for $469 or $479 from Bailey's right now. I paid $250 for one that was dang near spotless and was rented 20 times.
