I recently picked up a Homelite 750 at a really, really, really good price. My main purpose in having a big saw is for chainsaw milling. I have planned on using my 1020 XP, and it seemed like a good plan. I knew that worst case if I needed spare parts if something broke on my 1020 the replacement parts were very available and quite reasonable. My question is how much better would the 750 be at CSM, and how painful would replacement parts be, namely P&C? I'll upload pics in the next couple days. Thanks for your input fellas,

you would be better off using your 1020 if only based on P&C availability.

Yep. The XP1020 would be a better milling saw. More torque at low/mid RPM's. More robust. Only advantage the 750 would have is that the bars for them (Oregon D196) are still being made (at least in lengths up to 28"). If your XP1020 isn't an XP1020A (auto oiler version) then the 750 also has the advantage of having an auto oiler pump vs the manual only XP1020. The 750 is a BEAST, and certainly is a faster/better felling saw, but it's somewhat fragile, and parts are becoming scarce/expensive fast. The XP1020 shares parts with several other saws in the C-series/XP-series family. I'll bet you'll be receiving some PM's about that 750. You'd be getting one from me if I had the $$$ to wave around. Keep us posted as to which saw you use for milling. Pics would be good to keep Randy from posting more yellow mag pics here too...

Aaron, I don't have many pics yet but here are a couple from the seller along with a video he took of it running. Hopefully that keeps the Randy monster away....

 Man what a nice 750. That should be good to keep Mac pics away for at least 48 hrs. I'd ignore every PM you get and keep that saw. They don't come around that nice very often.

That is a nice 750 in deed. Got the nice little 1/2 safety guard.

Randy is a nice guy... it is just the sideways running weirdo saw that just doesnt fit.

Not even the south bay, but still envious - nice catch :)

I'm working on a Homelite 750 for a friend. His dad used it to put down some HUGE local redwoods in the '70s and '80s. He gave me the SP-81 I used the other day in exchange for the work on his saw. Hope to get the work done this weekend. With some luck we'll soon see/hear that old beast doing some cutting in the park. Gotta 'test' it before I give it back to be sure it's 100%:D

Local or w 750's

Wait, what?!?! So now I know who got that saw out from under me. :bang:

Wendell if you are longing for a 750, I have four, each with a story. they range from active fire wood cutter to a saw that has a NEW Piston from a secret place and a new cylinder from the chainsaw lady.

I know this sounds stupid, but when you post pics when you reply to a thread, how do you get them to show up? I figured out how to post them but when I post them only a link to them shows up. Not the actual picture.

I think you can use the search feature to find out how. It's been discussed several times.

New XL Aotomatics

I just picked up 2 XLs and a Craftsman 2.3/38 for $25.00. The best XL has 150lbs comp but no spark. It is fitted with the Wico points ignition. I would like to check the points under the flywheel. Do you need a puller to remove the flywheel. I removed the nut that holds it on but it won't move. This one came with a 20"bar and a used up chain. It will need at least new lines, new filters and a carb kit. But don't want to invest if I can't get spark. The other XL has spark but only 90 lbs comp. It's ign is the Phelon version and I think I could do a swap if I can't get the Wico to work.

Are we having fun yet!

Have you tried tapping on the edge of the flywheel on the non-magnet side to loosen it? Sometimes they're easy to loosen and sometimes you might need a puller. Don't hit the fins or pry on them!

Try tapping it with a hammer on the NON MAGNETIC side.
