I just have a simple question and it has probably been asked before but the site would not let me search the post history on this topic so here goes: I am trying to replace the sprocket on my XL2 and can not for the life of me figure out how to remove the friggin "bolt" that holds it on. It's head is semi-round with a hole in the center which I thought would be for an allen wrench but was nothing doing. Do I need a special tool or something? Thanks for the help!

Welcome fellow vermonter!

A few things, the bolt is left hand thread, so turning right will loosen it.

You can use a length of clean rope pushed down through spark plug hole as a piston stop.

You may need a special tool or to make your 'own' special tool. I'm half in the bag and can't remember exactly what kind of clutches were on those xl-2's. But you can usually make your own tool in a matter of minutes.

If you're anywhere in NE vermont I'd be happy to pop it off of there for you in 1/2 a minute.

Thanks for the replies guys. The hole in the center has nothing to grip a torx wrench or any other wrench for that matter. I'll post a picture of the setup tommorrow to make things easier. retoocs555, I live in Vergennes and I think I just bought a Jonsered 2051 from you! Talk to you tommorrow!

sorry i misread your post I thought you meant the screws that hold the engine in the case 2 on top and the 2 on the bottom
if I remember the homie xl2 correct it uses a e clip to hold the sprocket to the shaft

NUTS!

At least thats how the two I have handy are secured. I think there were some with clips and even something else that I havent come across yet witch may be what you have.

In anycase youll have to remove the engine from the case to replace the clutch drum.

No sweat cuttinscott. Thanks for trying to help. Anyhow, since yesterday, I have figured out how to remove the sprocket. There is a clip that I had overlooked before that I now know that needs to be removed. Thanks for the help. I'll get the sprocket changed after I get done tripping over myself!

Dang, I just learned something new today. That is a great idea and I would never have thought of it myself.

Another fine example of what makes this site worth visiting over and over and over and....
