Hi all I have a running Homelite XL800 unfortunately it has a tank leak at the seam and looks as though it has a historical silicone sealer repair ? my question is it a big job to remove the tank and what needs to come off ? being quite a rare saw it would be nice to keep her a running saw, even just for a collector, its an early one without the manual oil pump.

Nice saw! It's complicated on these models because the tank is actually part of the crankcase assembly. So you can tear the entire saw down to nuts and bolts and you'll still have a tank/crankcase assembly. The fuel tank cover can be removed (assuming you can get all of the screws loose) if you remove the starter, flywheel, ignition, carburetor and throttle handle. Rather than trying to split the tank, I'd recommend using Red-Kote. Follow the instructions on their website and you won't be disappointed.
