Wow, there are some big wood piles out there...I feel so inadaquate!! I dont know how to post all those photos but my pile is about 75' x 4' x 5' thats almost 12 cords ...I think. BUT keep in mind. Most of this was done with an axe. The really cool part is that the entire woodpile will be carried through my living room

Here is my wood stash for the winter. I usually burn between 10 and 13 face cords a heating season. I have a new stove for this season.... the manufacturer says it will burn 30-50% less wood.
What kind of stove did you get?

Here's a photo of my wood store I set up in early 2004 - pallets all up on blocks for good air movement up and through the stack. Corrugated iron on top weighed down by more pallets and logs. It doesn't usually look this neat - at least you can see the blocks in this photo - also in the foreground my saw horse I made from old greenhouse frames.

Each pallet has three "faces" of wood in it - in the middle there's the short stuff 6-10" length with longer 14-18" pieces on the outer faces where they get sun and better air movement. Also I try to stack the central layer (which never gets any sun) as open as possible to get optimum ventilation - View attachment 37731reduces the available storage but I'd rather have a slightly smaller amount of drier wood.

Oh yea - all cut by chainsaw and split by hand - although I'm thinking of buying a splitter.

There are 27 pallets in total in 3 rows all sited east west in full sun all day. Last season we got through about 20 pallets or so - about 5 full cords I reckon. We only used the gas central heating about 4 times all winter.

I've some really nicely dried oak and ash thats been in store since about May 2004 - saving it for a special occaision! Cheers, John.

I've got another area where wood is dumped by tree surgeons - its been accumulating faster than I can use it and this now covers more than a quarter acre. Some of the old stuff on the ground is rotting and fit only for the bonfire.

I've been sorting through and putting all the good stuff up on rows of pallets pending the purchase of a splitter. The pallets are stood on timber rounds that would otherwise go on the bonfire - they should last a few more years before they rot completely and it saves me buying a bunch more concrete blocks. I've put three rows up in the last two weeks. I reckon each section will produce somewhere between 4 and 6 cords after its split and restacked.

Much of this stuff is already nicely seasoned after two or three years on the pile. Yesterday I was measuring 14-18% with a 2-pin moisture metre.

With a full store of 27 pallets and this stuff queued up I should be good for the next three winters! Cheers, John.

PS. in the back right is my hazel coppice I planted March '93. Had a fine crop of home grown nuts this last two years.

Oops - I'll try to upload the photo again. Sorry about the double post - pls can someone remove the duplicate. Thanks.

Here's a few quick pics of my pile as of today... Not where I need to be yet, but I hope to move a lot in and out in the upcoming weeks..... Oh yeah, and a pic of how I load everyday...

Bottlefed89,

Where are you taking the second 2 pictures from? Are you in a tower or hanging out of a small plane?

Cool pictures!

Tom
