Not cold here!

It is nice and warm here been breaking records the last two day's It is +13c around 60f. Cut a load of wood today in a shirt! first time my chaps made me feel warm! But we will pay sooner or later!

Expecting the coldest night/day of the year, lows in teens tonight, wind chills bringing it down to single digits by morn,More water main breaks for me on the horizon,I suspect.

OK, that is way up... Don't think I'll be able to beat your temperatures this winter then.

But now it's down to -12C again so we'll see in the morning...

awww, its down to -3c now over here... the weather is so crazy here nowadays...

Blis,
We've had an exceptionally cold winter here in northeast Utah. We were as low as -31c with average daily lows of -27c for 2 weeks. Average highs were about -20c over that time. The last few days, we've reached highs of -9c and it feels like summer!!

It was -25 F last night. Coldest day so far this winter -51F for the overnight low and -40 for the high that day. Not even close to a record or even a "very cold day". By US Weather bureau definition, " a very cold day" for this region is one for which the high is not warmer than -45 F. Given global warming, "very cold days" are now pretty rare and overall this has been yet another much warmer than "normal" winter.

I was called out to salt last night, no main breaks in our area yet. Local system is not very old, mostly plasic (blue brute)
Heard the guys on the radio in the next town over though, they were out. Older cast iron system .....................

Temp was -17c when I went home at 11.00 pm, still dropping

-3F here this morning. First sub-zero temp of the season for me. The firewood piles will be going down now!

Now if it would only snow here in the northeast...........

-24c, -5f last night Now -15c ,5f and snowing, Looks like all the snow bikers will be invading the town this week end.

2F here in east/central Massachusetts. Coldest day by far. Loaded the stove four times last night, running with all vents wide open, and the oil furnace still kicked on.

Spent all day on a break, old hydrant tee, needed the space heater for the guys and the mudsucker pump.High today of 16above with the wind about 2 above.looks to be moderating a little tomorrow, low 30s for a high.

Do the mains break on a regular basis when it gets cold? Yikes. Here in Wisconsin we've had weather right down to -35 C for up to three weeks and I don't recall any of the towns having water main breakage. That's not to say it didn't happen, I just don't recall this being a big problem. Getting anything to start, that was problem.

Looks like we get about the same weather. No water problems yet this year here, but had to rebuild a hydrant (M67 Mcavity) in late January last year. Rather do a Darling any day! Helped with a couple of breaks in the next town over in Feb last year. Worst one, the main was down about 7 feet, three feet of frost, you get the picture. Their only licensed guy was on holidays down south......

Spent the day plowing and salting in the morning, plowing gravel roads in a grader in the afternoon......

A few below zero F here in central maine.

currently enjoying the thai rest's wi-fi.

think i'll be hitting the sauna in richmond... hoping for better snow to roll in.

Tends to be a problem on older systems. Old cast can crack all the way around the pipe, doesn't take much to aggravate a pipe that's been corroding in the ground for 50 years or so, even less for the older stuff. Some of the guys I work with (big amalgamated municipality) have even found wood mains still in service.

Some of the newer plastics are more forgiving, especially if there was a good installation in the first place. good specs on the materials AND a good job installing makes all the difference in the world!
