How did this saw die, and what to check when rebuilding?

I would lean toward straight gas.
Have you tried to clean up the cylinder yet?

Haven't tried to clean the cylinder yet. Tried to get photos but didn't have much luck with the lighting.

I second this idea. That way you can be sure everything is in good condition. I don't know how much you are looking to put into it. I've used aftermarket bearings from China before but I don't know about cylinders and pistons. I've only used OEM
I'm trying to put as little into the saw as possible; I got it for $80 shipped but I know how quickly that number can climb once we start replacing things. Originally I figured I'd tear it down if my other 024S needed anything, but this one seems to need little. I will still go through everything to check it out though. I like OEM whenever possible, especially for things like bearings and forged parts. Plastics and such I'm less particular.
