I bought a 16 in chainsaw for 145 canadian at pawn broker. No operator manual. I was playing around with a screw where the bar meet the chainsaw. Saw does not seem to be oiling itself anymore. Does this screw control oil. WHat mechanism oils the chain? I ran saw for awhile with no oil in the gas with no noticeable problem. People said it would seize up.

". I was playing around with a screw where the bar meet the chainsaw"

That screw adjusts the tension on the chain most likely.

"People said it would seize up."

It will, keep running it with straight gas and you will be out your $145 CD and not have to worry about the oiler working properly. It's important to use a good two cycle oil mixed at probably a 40:1 ratio for your saw.

Most oilers are run by a pump in the bar oil tank. Yours may be shot or plugged.

Before I go any further I will welcome you to Arboristsite. It's always great to have new members, inexperienced or well seasoned.
Having said that, I have read your first 6 posts. You are either pulling our legs or if you questions are genuine you are in very real danger of damaging your equipment, yourself or your neighbors house. This is not meant to belittle but as a friendly warning. Nobody here likes to see anybody get hurt or killed.(even if we disagree with their politics ) Chainsaws are great tools and can be a lot of fun but are extremely dangerous.

Hold on there new guy !

First of all welcome but get some oil in the gas.

The engine is designed to have oil in the gas.
The oil goes into the engine and lubricates it.
How long would your car engine last with no oil?
Oil mixture should be at least 50:1

There are two fluids that go into a saw.
The oil only lubricates the bar and nothing else.
The fuel / oil mixture provides combustion and lubrication of the engine. (It also removes the heat but we don't need to know this much this early in the game>)

If the saw is not oiling the bar hopefully it is a clogged intake and worst case the oil pump is broken and needs to be replaced.

i suspect this will be a learning experience.:) be sure an get u monies woth from this little experience as
u wont from your saw,. if u run it much with out gas oil mix.:)

You are right to worry about safety. I only ran the saw without oil for one gas tank. A hard hat and safety goggles and steel toed shoes should be used. About 20 years ago I used a chainsaw for clearing brush one summer for the municipality. Even had to fall a couple trees between power lines. No instruction on how to fall trees at all. A large branch landed on my head recently so I learned the importance of hard hats. THese large maples in Vancouver are often rotten and the tops can come crashing down on you and impale you or they split. It is really quite surprising that I have not injured myself so far. I still go out every weekend and do stupid stuff, though.

No, I'm not Mike. I'm actually a very cautious (cowardly) person. I have cut the down the odd tree through the years when i got the fever. I think i always put the notch on the side opposite to where i wanted it to fall. I thought the weight would than shift to side that was intact and fall in that direction. i have a electric chain saw , too, and I ran it with the chain on backwards a few times. It still cut. The off switch does not work so the saw comes on as soon as i plug it in. Amateurs are dangerous people, i guess.

I changed the position of screw and I'm getting oiling. I noticed what looked like purple bird poop on the log i was cutting. For some reason , the oil is becoming sludge. I guess i should clean sawdust off saw.

Fishing is supposed to be splendid up here. Campbell river on vancouver island is a favourite of americans. I thinks the herring fishery recently went tits up. They are retraining all the unemployed fisherman.

took saw apart. the screw adjusts the bar to to tighten or loosen chain. you obviously have to loosen bolts so bar can slide.
