Hi folks, Plenty of questions to keep you busy ! What is the maximum realistic day to day size of bar that my stihl ms460 can push , it is a uk spec machine which gives 6hp at 14000 revs. I have noticed that the chain runs pretty dry with a 20" bar and I have heard that you can get a heavy duty pump replacing the piston and control bolt - does anyone have any numbers for these ? Also the Uk spec air filter is pretty crap so I want to fit a heavy duty filter but will obviously then have to re-tune the carb, this is difficult to do because of the red adjustment limiting plugs - can these be removed ?
Lastly , I have a stihl 051 AV with a 30" (ES) 404 bar with 0.063 pitch and a 12 tooth nose sprocket ( stihl no: 3002009741 ) I want to change this saw to 3/8 s , would a 13 tooth sprocket from a 3/8s bar (say a 30030009831) fit my 404 bar ? Any help would be appreciated :chainsaw:

First off welcome to AS :)

I have seen stock 460's running 32" in hardwood, I wouldn't want to do it all day everyday, bu it will run it. Changing out the air filter sholdn't require you adjusting the carb beyond the limits of the caps, put might, and they are removable, just adjust the carb and put them back on when done.
Can't help at all with the other saw.

I don't have the part number, but all you have to change is the nose to a 3/8", and your drive sprocket to match. I got a .404 bar with my 066 and converted it over. Pretty easy swap, just some drilling, some punching the old rivets out, and some hammering.

You could run a 32" bar, but would consider using a skip chain if you want to bury it in order to keep the revs up. 32" in hardwood I would think would be on the outside of what it will want to do with a full comp chain. I think Sawinredneck about nailed it. Not something I would want to do every day. I often have a 36" bar on my 066, and that is about right for big work.

I may be wrong but the replacement tip number should be 3003 650 2551 and for the wide nose bar it is 3003 650 2539.

Dumb question but is your oiler turned up all the way. Ifyour in hardwood a 460 will pull a 32 with skip chain but its working the saw pretty good. It will pull it with full comp but thats really working the saw.

28" and 32" full skip, all hardwood here. Does a good job for the weight to carry. Welcome also.

old saw is on it

stock 460 in hard wood 32 to a 28 will work ok but a 25 will let it live a bit easier and a sharp chain is a must period,,,, espcially with the bigger iron

That's exactly my point. It will do it, but it isn't going to like it much. Sawinredneck said the same, and I agree. I wouldn't want to use that combo on a regular basis. If it the big bar came out in a jam, I'd be okay with it. If you want to hang a 32" bar on it in hardwoods all day, get an 066. If you want a saw that will dominate with a 20-24" bar, the 460 is on my short list. If I'm going to be out all day, I don't want "okay", I want "good" or better. Much easier on the saw too. A 460 isn't really made to do that on a daily basis.

I also run a 32" with a full skip on mine. Pulls fine.
