Now, I know this topic has been covered before but
Yesterday a fellow climber and myself decided to test the limits of my Big Shot. We tied a Harrison Rocket (8oz) to some Zing-it (1.75) and went out my backyard to push the limits. The first shot was straight up with the Big Shot pulled to within a foot of the ground. We marked the line and measured it with a 300ft tape, it was 140ft straight up. We then tried it again but at a slight angle, this shot soared to 160ft. We repeated this a few more times and found the results to be the same. I have a new found respect for the mighty Big Shot, this is crossbow range. Have any of you guys tried this?

One customer on a lakefront lot was intrigued by my BigShot. He had some old golfballs so we shot them from the driveway over the house and backyard out into the lake. I think we could challenge Tiger Woods for distance and height. :p

Well TC165 the real reason for this unscientific experiment was for recreational climbing. I'm hooked on the old growth.

I hit a 90' crotch with the old slick line and a 16 oz. bag, on the third shot last thursday. We had a camera on the job and the baq looked to clear the crotch by 4-5'.
If you're looking for more distance put the sling head on a 12' pole. That might take two people to cock, depending on how long your arms are.

Golf

Our ISA chapter (Prairie) has instituted an anual Big Shot Golf tournament. I do not want to brag............... Ahemmm.
But I did win the Longest drive. I will not say how far because I hate to be called a liar. Sort of like fishing.

Have any other chapters done this???

If not , try it. Loads of fun.

Tim Bushnell told me last year that the record as far as he knew was a little bit over 200 feet straight up. Really light bag, and VERY small line. Accuracy at that height though is not good. I have tried outshooting a golf club and did not do well. I think the key to doing that would be to make a divit in the ground so you can get the pole at a smaller angle to the ground.

golf

My secret, if you can call it that was an extra pole and a quick release.

A little hard on the rubber but when victory is at stake...........

Being the size I am, I find that I need 10ft of pole to be comfortable. I can use 12ft witha little manuvering though. Gotta pull the sac down as I place the but in the ground.

Tom,
Have you hooked up with Mike Oxman on any old growth climbs? I roomed with him when we were working in NC last month and he likes to climb a big one every couple months or so. I think his email and possibly his phone number are in his profile or on his website (which is listed in his profile). I'll get out west one day and I'll be looking for some big climbs, for sure!

Andy Barrell sent us some more pics, (they'll be on the cover). Without giving away the pics or the story, I can say 12ft pole, very light line, a compact weight, and 275 feet. 275 feet. 275 feet. No typo's here. 275 feet!!!

Did you say 275ft? Now that's some distance. I was happy with 160. Looks like it's time for some modifications.

TC165,
I have gone climbing with Ox, in fact you can find some pics of one such climb on his wedsite under the Hurricane Ridge Climb.

Tom (and everyone else for that matter),
Please please PLEASE be careful!!!! Hearing "modifications" sends a chill down my spine. If used improperly, or with non approved poles, the Big Shot can result in serious injury. Always wear your helmet and safety glasses when using the Big Shot, even if you're just shooting stuff up in the air to measure distance. Sorry to preach to the choir, but I just had a gut feeling that compelled me to do so. :)

i was wondering how many posts
would go by before sean would

i thought for sure that it would have

the other day after a climb, man oh man did
they fly!!!!:D

Sean,
If I may be so bold as to translate this.... "12ft pole, very light line, a compact weight".... Compact weight = a lead fishing weight.
I know a guy who uses them with the BS and they are just slow moving bullets. Glad to see you CYA.
God bless,
Daniel
