Ted I think you are right about the rot potential. I had oak rounds that went to paper after three years uncovered but elevated off the ground. If i get 5 years I will be happy.
 
Wood will not decompose if stored out of the weather.
It will take a bit longer to season and will have very little color change or cracking.
Growing up all our wood was stored inside., when the old homestead was sold the new owner had plenty of 20+ yr old wood to burn.
I have a round that I use for splitting kindling on that is over 40 yrs old.
