Hello,

i'm new to the forum, and have a question.

Lets say you have a big log, and the volume is known, by mass.

Say the log is 2 cubic meters massive wood, will it be 1,2, or more stacked up?

How much fire wood (cut and split) wil get out of it?

Need to know because i can buy a few very big logs, but dont want to
pay more than the firewood will bring me.

pi x r^2 x l x the density of the wood (green) to get the log weight then there are some cord wood weight tables you can look up the weight per cord.

Or rough numbers there are 70-90 cubic feet or about 2 to 2.5 cubic meters of wood per standard full cord. All depends on how it is split and piled though.

We dont legally measure firewood in cords anymore because one mans cord was not always the same size as the other guys cord.

But it is suppose to measure 3.6 cubic metres from memory. I just sell it by the cubic metre ... which is exactly one full trailer load of my wee tipper.

Yup, 3.6 cubic meters or 128 cubic feet as piled, but of that only 70-90 cubic feet or 2 to 2.5 m3 is actuall wood, the rest the space in between pieces. A logs all wood though, unless it's hollow, so if figuring cubic feet of log into cubic feet of piled wood use the 70-90 cubic feet or 2 to 2.5 m3.

Its amazing how 1 trailer load of logs turns into 1.5 or better trailer loads of fire wood.

Good post. I think that this is what the original poster was asking about.

That's the reason, if you are tight about money, buy your wood in the 'round and split it yourself. A cord of rounds will expand about 10% after splitting. Even better is to buy it in the log and also cut it yourself but that doesn't result in all that much gain.

Thanks Timberwolf got it. its 1,5 time the volume of the timber, so we are selling 50 percent air.

Thanks
