i'm clearing out some ash trees for a couple of people behind their houses. the problem is the trees are on the other side of a creek and there is no way to drive back there except thru an open field where a builder is going to build houses later this fall.

so....i called the builder and explained my dilema and he said "no problem" to driving across the field to get the wood out....then he asked if i could leave him some fire wood. lol...i said no problem.

so...the trees aren't on his property, but i couldn't get them out if he didn't let me drive back there.....so, how much should i leave him?

what would be a fair amount?

I think I would pile up a bunch close to the edge of the woods, then tell him to back his truck on over to the pile. Throw in as much as he can hold (hopefully he doesnt drive a dump truck or something) and then thank him for the use of his pasture.
Seems like you both would win there. He gets a free load of wood, and you get access to your wood.

He did not do you too much of a favor but, I find builders are a good source of free wood, you may want to consider that when you make your decision. If a relationship with this guy could lead to future wood you may want to take good care of him.

i was thinking about that.

at the far end of the field there are some huge standing...some dead cherry trees he might want out. this whole area is like either cherry or ash.....i get excited every time i'm back there lol

Yikes! Could this be called... SWAD?

Scrounging
Wood
Addiction
Disease

Yep, a really decent pickup truck load, sounds about right.

well.....they are going to be building custom homes back there this fall...most of it is an open field, however the borders have some nice trees. i'm sure he might have to get rid of them.

i'll leave him a little over a face cord and see how he reacts.

lol..yea...i got the SAWD. bad case of it too.

you might want to drop a load off to him and ask him about the other trees.. he may tell you to have at it. it looks like it could be a win-win situation for you both.

well...he's a builder. this section is going to have very expensive homes built...in the 400k and up range. i doubt he's the type to be out splitting wood on a sunday afternoon.

i'm going to leave him a face cord of 4 to 6" diameter wood. i'll mix the ash and cherry that i have cut already. i'll bet he'd be happy with wood he could just throw on an "ornamental" fire without the hassle of splitting it.

but, still....he just might tell me to whack them all down. lol if not, i have to remove 5 huge ash trees for the person who owns the land. i dropped a cherry tree last spring but left it there, so i gotta grab that this weekend with the other wood.

I have a little different situation. One place I can cut has Hedge. The widow on the property has given me permission to go in and cut any that bear fruit. I leave her a face cord in her rack for every 4-5 I take out for myself. She gets wood without having to pay her hired man and we get a free place to cut posts and firewood with a locked gate.

That would probably a bit much for the guy that only gives a temporary easement. A nice face cord as mentioned will probably make him happy and as mentioned, will open up a new relationship for more places.

If you get @ 2 or more cords, leave a pick-up truck load. That's @ 1/2 cord = $90.00 arond here.:greenchainsaw:

My cousin lets his neighbor cut in his woods on a one third basis. He gets one cord the guy cutting gets two. I wouldnt do it for that but that is what he gets.
