Crepe Myrtle can be pruned properly just like any other tree. They do tend to grow back with vengeance, so many are sheared or just lopped off at the top.

If you want to take the time to do it correctly there is no reason that in an hour our two you could not make reduction cuts at nodes (laterals) with a long reach pruner that will reduce the height of your tree. It will grow back next year or whatever your growing season is and you will have to repeat the process on an annual or multi annual basis. This is not a "one and done". You will need to stay on top of it. If you want "one and done" cut it at the base and treat the stump with Tordon.

Properly pruning will reduce advantageous growth and over time you will end up with a better looking and healthier tree. Mind you, I said over time, Rome wasn't built in a day.......
