It gets in the way. If the saw gets pinched it can't be pulled out of the cut because the hook gets caught on the limb. Also the hook can damage bark on limbs behind the one being removed.
I also don't care for the lower hook being on the same side as the teeth. When using the hook to grab ropes the teeth could catch the rope. But, don't know how to fix that since it's part of the blade.
I agree with Rocky, Rob. I've used hooked blades for many years, and wouldnt be without them. Seldom have a problem with them catching in a cut. The benefits far outweigh that one potential problem. For pulling hangers, the hook is far easier to use than the lower hook, and for evergreens, it makes it even easier to remove (and pull)tiny duff when lightening limbs.
The bottom hook is part of the blade on the model I have. I dunno, one polesaw blade isn't enough. Would like to have one w/o the hooks on the same side as the teeth. And one with a narrower blade for getting in between tight limbs. This big blade sure is an aggressive SOB.
I'm with ORclimber. I don't like the hook. I can snag a hanger no problem with a regular tipped blade. And they do get hung up easier.
BUT, I really hate the rounded-over end on tha Zubat blade. I'm gonna grind mine out asap, and see if I can get a tooth on the end. Ya can't yank stuff as well with that safety tip, IMO.
ORclimber. Sherrill's sells an ARS blade that is "universal" (to fit all heads)- It would seem that it would fit their own polesaw as well. It doesn't have the hooks but has the gulleted razortooth blade.
MB, What kind of grinder are you going to use? I don't like the rounded end on the zubat either. Reminds me of the tip guards put on homeowner saws.
Stumper, Good idea. I see Sherril also has an adaptor for Sherril/Marvin/Corona heads at $14 that would work on it. Still would like to get rid of that tip hook though.
