Hi,
I have read lot´s of good threads about Muffler Modifications on a Stihl ore a Husky.
But I don´t know how to modificate my one.
Has anybody made changes to an 026/260 ?
Can anybody tell me the dimensions of holes and Pipes I have to drill and welde?

Im telling you, how i wantet to make it.

1.Make the Wholes in the inner Basket behind the Front Cap bigger or drill new ones. Maybe some in front of the Basket and not at the side.....But how big to drill the wholes????

2.I want to make some Big wholes in the Outside Cap with pipes like the Walkerized(instead of the little slots in the original) ....but how many pipes and how big the dimensions?!?!?!?!?

If anybody could have some Ideas, that would be great

Thx
C.

sry for my bad english

My 026 is a little over 1 year old and does not have any inner basket. Must be tighter EPA restrictions, I would completely remove the inner basket.
My outside cap is different from yours, but I modified mine following advice here. I made the hole in the outer cap a little bigger than the exhaust port. Probably about 7/8"X 1 1/2". But I was careful not to cut away the screen support, so I still have the screen covering the entire outlet hole.
Now my 026 runs like the 026's of old, much stronger than the 'new improved' version (thanks, EPA  ).

Muffler changes

According to Ken Dunn, you need to remove the bottom of the inner basket leaving everything else. The reason for this is that the basket helps retain strength built into the muffler. I would then just put a hole in front 1 3/8" X 7/16" and cover it with a screen. Pipes while they look cool are just to much hassle. The way I did it can be done with no welding. I just did 3 044's this way and they run great. Husky288 bought the one I did for myself. This opening size was recommended for an 044 or 066, an 026 may need a slightly smaller hole. Check with Ken Dunn on this one. Good Luck, Rich.

Why do we need this additional strength in the muffler all of a sudden? last year's muffler on the same saw had NO interior baffling of any kind, and no interior 'reinforcement'. I guess it is to address all those collapsing mufflers we are all plagued with.
Of all the threads posted on modifying mufflers, I have yet to see one that says the baffles are needed inside a muffler. Please find it and link to it for us, I don't believe you.

hi "tuners"

ok, that sounds all good and i will perform the changes if i have a little time next Month.

@ treeclimber165

Must be tighter EPA restrictions ! I even think so...
What does it mean screen support? I only know what a computer screen is....shame on me....
Is your exhaust hole on the right side? Or is the older Model total different?
I even don´t think, that the Basket is nessesary for strengh. The Muffler is to small to have big Forces. More Forces in a bigger Construction could make a Basket necessarily.
That is what i think.....

@bwalker
(kd muffler modifications)With this search stings i cant find anything...Ok,two 5/8 Pipes are ok for me.

@rich
like John said.....put it on a Server and link to it at the "new-post-menue"
Hmmm, i think Pipes are better(and cooler :) than simple holes....you can even send the exhaust Dust in a Direction you want. That helps you to keep for example the chain cleaner. My original 260 Muffler points directly to the chain....

The screen I refer to is the spark arrester screen just inside the exhaust outlet. My exhaust outlet is in the front center of the outside cap, where yours has a rectangle shaped indent.
If you are decent at welding, go with the pipes. It'll look better. :p

...my welding is much better than my english....
Now it´s clear, what you ment with screen...:)
Do you think i should welde a extra screen in the new pipes? Somebody said, something could get sucked in......or is it only because of the sparks?

I took a new MS260 and took a few pics...
Our MS260's over here have a much different muffler arrangement. The baffle type was used on Stihl 024's here in the states for some time. The new MS260 is wide open and then as you can see in the pics that a small hole in the front cover is the only outlet through a spark arrester screen (USFS approved I'm sure)...

I also posted the Stihl MS260 parts list up on my server (for a short time that is...)
here is a link to it:

Sorry so many and if your on dial up service may take a min...

Jeff,
That's erxactly what my muffler looks like. I ground off 80% of the raised rectangle area where the screen is mounted (the inside part- second to last picture). My saw pulls a lot stronger now.

If you don't have a copy already of the parts lists- grab a copy of it a save it to your HD for future reference. I won't leave it up long.

This Part List is verry verry cool.
Here in Germany you have to spend lot of Money to come to an Manual like this....If you hardly can persuade somebody !!!!!!!
Nicew nice nice....
Now it is getting clearer, what treeclimber165 was telling me about a "spark arresting screen"
I think you guys have it more simple to modify this Muffler. But now i have the Part numbers of the US Muffler. Think I will combine the US rear Part with my Front Cap & 2 Weldet Pipes. I only use the saw for making Fire Wood and it is no Problem with the sparks & Firestarting......anyway it rains 90% of the yearly in good old Germany....we don´t have a Spark Problem ;)
Is it possible for You to get this pdf List also for the 036 Stihl?
Thx
C.
