Randy your the man. Exactly the set up I'm gonna build for myself so thank you for this thread. You have my attention. I have 3 questions for ya if you wanna. 1st - the .060 you took outta the squish was that all cleareance or did ya cut the base too? 2nd- outta curiosity when you got the squish cut so the jug would fit. Did you pull the timing numbers? 3rd - have you measured the venturi size of the carb. Curious if it's the same as a 7910. Thank you again. I really think you need to bring this up to matts so I can run it this weekend! :)

I'm guessing there is a slight difference in piston height? 2mm extra stroke and 1.5mm (060") squish cut.
It should give some serious compression numbers.

Hello Carl.

Your first question: I took out .060 and used a 7910 base gasket just to get the .020 squish clearance I wanted. I took nothing from the base.

2nd: Yes I did. I did not write them down though. about 108/132/81 is my memory is correct though.

3rd: I have not. But I will be looking very closely at the carb. Just so happens that I have a 6400 sitting here that I'm doing the same thing too.

I wonder the same thing. Honestly, I didn't check. I first cut .040 from the squish band, and it was still a head slapper. So I took .010 more.

I'm using a pretty high exhaust port on this saw to lose some compression.

What about the ignition on this saw. Is it limited? 272 coil fix?

It is limited. HL Supply is working on a aftermarket coil that will be unlimited. In the mean time, this saw is getting the 272 coil.

To those who question the logic of this thread...to me its about being willing to look at options, especially on older saws where innovation will be required to make then run. Of course that's the fun for me. The boring approach would be...that's takes time....that would be better spent by buying a new saw, sending it to a "pro", or some other conventional wisdom. So this is a cool thread. In the same spirit as Homelite410's blending of cases and larger cylinders or mixing pistons from other saw models to get either compression or timing changes without resorting to machine work.

Thank you. Those are excellent starting numbers.

Yes they are.....not a ton needed on raising the uppers.

I'm going in a different direction on this saw than you would expect to see from me.

As you know, I've done quite a few 681s......and to be honest I've never done one that just made me think "WOW"......they end up very strong, but just not where I think they can be.

I'm hoping to change that with this build.

Excellent. Just sent ya a pm with what I was thinking. Well see if it's along the same lines as u. Lol. I'm excited to see the results.
