How'd I do?

That's one of the best things about that face -- if the log jumps off of the stump, it's NOT going back into one of your escape routes. This may not be desirable in hardwoods with complex crowns, but it's great for tall, narrow conifers.

I rarely ever see a tall conifer. When I do, it's a very large diameter trunk. I'll bet those tall skinny trees do have a tendency to leap backwards off the stump if you do it wrong. It's probably a lot worse if you give it about a 45° conventional face cut with a level back-cut. Give that a thick hinge that snaps violently with some bouncing action, a tall skinny tree might chase you quite a ways away from the stump before it decides to fall down all the way.

Humbolt would cover that nicely, wouldn't it?

Thanks guys, that's the kind of evaluation I was looking for. Reading these and looking at the pictures a bunch of times, I can see where I should have done better and what I need to do to improve. I don't cut professionally, but want to be able to do it correctly and safely. Besides I like to learn new stuff and I know I can get honest advice and opinions here.

Lfnh, good eye, :msp_thumbup: it was pretty straight up about 30' then the head leaned out into the lay. It was dead standing.

Pdqdl, I didn't intend to under cut it to save wedging, in fact I had wedges thinking I was going to get on in there for practice but when I saw how deep my face cut was I didn't have any room in the back cut for a wedge. :bang:

Ok, thanks for that detail. always different standing at the stump.
another use for a deep face is a straight clean big stem with its top blown out. just get a couple of wedges in the back cut soon as there's space. cut some. snug them, repeat. Putting that more under the center is a lot less to lift with the wedges since you got no help from the crown. Shallow face is just beating the weges to death trying to lift the whole back half over.
Nice work and thanks for the pics.
