I heard plenty back in TN that "back when it wharn't nothin to see a whole mountain on fire" the blueberries were much better. In WV, there's sang (ginseng), morels, and for those willing, rattlesnakes for milking for venom for anti-venom. Fruits of the earth.
 
down in these parts we have what i refer to as "gooseberries"very few people here knew of them as i grew up,i would practically have to dare others to try them,they have all the warning signs that say do not eat,they are bright to dark red depending on maturity and covered in nasty spines,but inside is the sweetest berry around,i eat the whole berry spines and all takes a little practice but it saves time if you need a quick sugar boost out in the woods...

haha,guess you guys got em too,yeah trick is to use your teeth,you can peel em open but thats a waste of time to me, i can clean off two three good size bushes once they get to a maroon color in early fall...yup most people think im nuts...:dizzy:i always keep an eye out for blackbears they also enjoy their flavor...

I don't know if we have them or not... That's an image from Google. I'm gonna look and see if we have them--though I'm probably not gonna stick them barbed things in mah mouth. ;)
 
pull em off the sprig, as to lay over the spines in one direction once they lay over they cant get your fingers...after that its up to you what to do with em...also wait till fall when they are maroon and almost black in the best of patches...
