Huskee 22 Ton Splitter

Just recently purchased a Huskee 22 ton splitter from our local Tractor Supply. Price was right and it starts first pull every time.
But,....the base is really under-sized and it could also stand to have some side wedges to make it a four-way.
Has anyone had any experience modifying the 22 ton model to increase the base area and adding side wedges to make it more efficient???

I think you would be buying trouble if you put any side wedges. I'm no expert, just my opinion. I bought the big brother of you splitter.
 
Thanks A. Stanton. Yeah, the base on your model is what I'm looking for. It's much more substantial then the base on mine.

I'll have to tow it down to a fabricator in town and see what he can do.

Haven't run in to anything I can't split yet with the throttle on 1/4 or so. Owners manual wants me to run it full throttle, but there's just no need to burn all that fuel.

Word to the wise: You might want to hold off on making any permanent modifications until the warranty expires. You might be voiding the warranty and left holding the bag.

Agreed. Run it only for what you need it. I do the same for my stihl trimmer. Dealer said to run it (and the saw) full throttle all the time. Doesn't make sense from a consumption point of view, and safety too.

splitter

if your referring to using this splitter when it is in the upright position, I've found that you can build up around it with some dirt or old bark to keep the wood from wandering around on you. another mod I have made to mine is to cut the angle iron back 1.5" from the solid end to keep the crap from building up under it. also have made some grates to hold the wood from falling off untill wanted, I can remove the wood and stack buy tossing it into the rows.
I to use this splitter at only an idle ,it will split most of what you throw at it if needed you can reach the throttle with ease and increase the speed . the speed of the engine makes little difference as to the speed of the ram , with one person it is fast enough .

I agree running the splitter at part throttle will save fuel but it also puts more strain on the engine. These engines are designed to run at near full throttle. They are splash lubricated, they do not have a oil pump, at lower rpm's they receive less lubrication. They also are designed to produce max. torque and hp. at high rpm. Running them slow when working adds to strain and wear.

Hydraulic pumps will produce max. pressure at any rpm when flow is restricted but flow or gallons per minute is effected by speed. A pump running at 1800 rpm's will produce half the gpm that a pump running at 3600 rpm's.
