Hi from New Zealand,
have been reading this site off and on for some time.Very educational and amusing to.
My cheap second hand 141 has had lots of attention from me to prolong its life -cant resist understanding all about any internal combustion engines i own.Maintain repair etc.
Saw has provided me with a couple of cords of wood and is still going well.
although it has erratic idling.
When i start the saw it tends to idle to fast but once hot slows down and will idle reasonably well for some time although speed required is with chain creeping slightly.
Mixture screws initial setting seems to be around 2 turns to get the saw able to 4 cycle and have good power -considering its a poulan in disguise.LoL
I have done basics ,cleaned and re kitted carb ,checked impulse tube and fuel line.
Question : is my saw suffering from the beginning of low compression or an air leak. I really need a slightly bigger saw but would like to keep this one working well. Is it worth me putting new piston in ,if it is any links to proceedure for this appreciated;any special tools required .
Sorry for long winded post.
Regards
pete
ps- No limit caps on this model when produced for nz ,notice fine thread on needles indicating designed to be finely tuned for epa markets ? 2 turns out on screws normal

i had a 141 and i loved it.

only reason i sold it was because i cannot use all of my saws at once and i was offered 25 bucks less tha i paid for it.guy who bought it loves it.

mostly i needed the shelf space for my 372xp obsession.

I would certainly pull the muffler and have a look at the piston. Mine was having similar problems and when I checked, the piston was well scored. I was frankly surprised that it was cutting as well as it had been. If your piston looks good, I would go back through the intake sytem and make sure it's sealed well. Got a clean air filter? Have you cleaned the cylinder fins at all? If its not passing air the saw will get too hot.

You mentioned you did a carb kit...did you thoroughly clean all the passageways? Did you remove the jets, clean them and their seats? Did you replace the welch plugs? The fuel line on these is an anemic little thing.. make sure its not getting pinched or folded.

Its possible that you have a seal leak, but when I had mine apart I thought the seals looked pretty robust. The good news is that, the way the crankcase is constructed, if you go in to do a piston, you'll get friendly with the seals also. There is no extra work involved (other than waiting a month for the seals to arrive!)

The piston swap on this saw is no worse than any other and I like the 41/141s. I'm pleased with the performance of the saw now that I've done mine. If you decide to do the piston, do a muffler mod also...the 141 responds very well to a muffler mod... just be sure to adjust the carb correspondingly.
