Thanks to help from this forum a few months ago, I decided on the 346xp as the saw for me.

I had been using a Stihl MS250C, which was good, but is starting to die on me!

I do mainly limbing work - I am clearing many acres of woodland of laurel, which grows very high and is anything from 1 inch to 12 inch diameter. So I don't need a big saw - weight and ergonomics are more important.

I've used the 346 for about 2 weeks now and it's great - light, feels solid, powerful and also fast, it accelerates very quickly, so you just have to blip the throttle to remove anything up to 3 inches. So all in all a great choice.

I tried a 350 and a 455 Rancher before the 346 - I used them a few times each then sold them on - I wasn't very impressed - but the 346 ticks all the boxes.

My only grumbles re. the 346 would be;

a) filler caps a bit hard to open with gloves on - threads are not very long, and they can get stuck tight shut. Stihl is much better here.

b) run switch - I prefer Stihl. It is a bit fiddly to have to pull choke out, then push it back in to turn run switch on, but hey, no biggy!

Quick question - it has a spark arrestor as I imported it from the US. But here in NW France, it is VERY wet, and forest fires are unheard of. I would like to remove it, as a) it's something else to maintain/worry about, b) it impedes exhaust flow. Can anyone think of a reason why running the saw without the arrestor would cause any problems?

Thanks again!

Take the spark arrestor away if you feel you don't need it and there is no fire danger !
you can push the start button/lever up with out using the choke !

Good choice on the 346xp I like mine allot :)

.....

I like the one on the 346 etc very well. When the saw is hot, just pull the on/off switch streight up - no need to activate fast idle with the choke lever.....;)

This way to do it is not in the user manual, but it works anyway.

+1 no need for fast idle/choke when warm, when half warm i find it needs fast idle to start well...

oh, and congratulatiosn on fine choice for saw :hmm3grin2orange:

ps. dont tighten the caps tight, just so that it feels firm, it wont leak but will open nicely too...

Thanks

Thanks for the comments. I see what you mean re. the run switch, I got it worked out now!

Just to be sure about this spark arrestor - noone see any problem running without it? (eg. too lean, too hot....??)

If you've been running with the arrestor clogged, you might need to richen the carb a bit.
It'll make the saw breathe a tiny bit better.

No saws come with a spark arrestor here, but Witchys new Dolmar PS-5100SH from the US came with one.

I will just remove it, before it is even started, and check the rpms with a tach that I got in the same package......:biggrinbounce2: :blob2:

lil offtopic, but how much did it cost with shipping (the saw) ?

I find that the caps on my 346 are not to good. I wonder if the new style caps with that green ring would work better?

seriously, whats wrong with them? i dont have any problems atleast in neither 242xpg nor 353G...

Hi,

I like my 346XPG for the small stuff too! I know what you mean about the caps, even when I just "loosely" tighten them I normally need to use a lever to get the oil cap open again.

Bye
