Hello All

Terrific site and tons of great info. This is my first post and I should say straight off that I am not a big time wood cutter - fire wood and wind damage mostly. I am very happy with both the 353 etech and the new MS361 and performance-wise I don't feel any need to modify.

However I was reading old threads and found one where Sawtroll pointed out the the etech ran sufficiently hot that the owner may want to do something about it. My question is whether there are minor mods that may be done to the saw which would be aimed solely at maintaining engine life. I really like this saw and would hate to cook it prematurely.

Thanks
Joe

swapping the e-tech muffler to non-cat would be serious improvement and you would also get bit more power out of it...

Think so, but you will need to deal with making an adjustment on the carb, the etech carb may be too lean for the non etech muffler.

Thanks for the responses guys

Is the etech muffler a lost cause or would drilling it out help? There are probably lots of threads about opening it up. Again - I'm more interested in saw life than performance increase.

Thanks again
Joe

It can be opened up, but is more difficult than mufflers that bolt together in two pieces. If you have or know someone with drilling and welding equipment, then it is no big deal to make a little more room for the hot exhaust gasses to get out.

In the end it will cut faster, it will be a bit louder, and will burn a bit more fuel, but it will run cooler, which must be good for lasting longer.

Use your own judgement on messing with the material on the CAT plate, manufacture says it is bad for your health.

By all means ditch the cat muffler. I can say from expiereance that drilling holes in the cat isnt as effectiveas swapping out the muffler. PLus even after drilling holes the cat stills glows cherry red when in use so it still runs very hot.
