I`ll tell you how to get "approved" by Husky and Stihl for a dealership in a saturated market. Tell them that you want to place a $25k initial order. They will pull the rug out from under a small dealer to make room for you.

Hey jokers,
Do you know what the min. order to get set up as a Stihl or Husky dealer would be? I was figuring it would cost me $100K for inventory and working capital to set up a landscape and tree supply store, but my brother figures I could do it for $50K.

Hi Koa Man,

A few years ago the Husky minimum was $10k but now that you have to stock lawnmowers and such it`s more. I don`t officially know what the minimum initial order is now but do know that they are very pleased when you want $25K to start. Stihl was less distinct about a minimum order but I`m going to say between $10-$15k of equipment, parts, and tools and the $3200 sign. The sign is lighted though, guess it`s worth it, LOL. Jonsered through Tilton`s was $5k. Dolmar was 5 saws, I`m not kidding either. Echo and Shindaiwa are also pretty cheap to get into, and although I`ve never checked, I get the feeling that Solo is a relatively small investment based on what a couple of Solo dealers have told me.

I think $50k could get you off the ground as long as you and your brother can share the shop hours with no pay and do the wrenching for awhile until you build a customer base. It`s no get rich quick scheme but it can work with your diversified background providing the value of knowledge and experience to the needs of your customers.
