Just my two cents,
If I owned an engine that "sudden just quit" and I found the piston scored. There is no way that I would put a new piston and new rings in that damaged cylinder. Why do it half right? It should be bored if possible, or replaced.
Before you take it apart, you might want to figure out what caused it in the first place, otherwise it may happen again with the new compopnents.
