Blasphemy! From the ages of 13-17 I shot hundreds of chucks with a #1 in .25-06. Hundreds. .220 Swift picky? Well, if you load your own, you can pretty much take care of that. But yes, they're a little hairy. I think more than anything, I like the action.

I am not saying the number one is a bad gun, they just don't give me what I want out of a Varmint rifle. I am looking for groups well into the sub minute of angle, 5 shot not three.

Just so you guys don't think I am anti Ruger here's a shot from the other day. 369yrds ranged with a lica range finder. I am just getting tuned up for my 2 trips coming up. Montana and Alberta. After that it's just trapping and maybe run a few cats in Jan.

Nice. That dude was a little chunky. Actually, shooting woodchucks that have been eating a farmers beans is a good way to get on thier good side, so you can cut wood on thier property. See? Everything ends up being about the wood, and chainsaws, one way or the other.

Wow , this thread sure derailed.:D With all of the rifle talk the preferred chainsaw brand ought to be Husqvarna. (or Remington I guess). Husky is where I come down on saw preference between Stihl and Husky but I am greatly impressed by Dolmar.

Red Mist Society

Here is my varmit rig. Remington Police special swat team gun in 223. . Doesnt have the snot a of a 22-250 or a swift, but it gets the job done. I shot quit a few chucks with this gun using Nosler ballastic tips with devistating results.

This gun would be good for shooting Elephants, A T Rex, or a Brink's truck if you used solids.
Its a Remington 700 custom safari in 416. rem mag. This gun is way to light for this calliber and tends to punish who ever shoots it.

.223 is imho, an excellent cartridge. Cheap and plentiful. And, as BW states, more than adequate for chucking. I am also a big fan of .243. Red mist, indeed.

A fifty!

Small tree take-downs at 1500m.

The 088 of shoulder-fired rifles?

Not enough chucks in maine to use my 223 to its full potential. But its fun to shoot the AR anyways. Fairly cheap too.

Since were are on the subject Pistols what yous faves.

Mine H&K USP in 40 S&W

I shot a fifty once and one with no muzzle break at that. It was a 500. A-square built on a mod Enfield action called the Hannibal. It was given to my dad by some guy who's name I cant recall. The gun itself was an ugly club and simply dished out too much punishment to be shot properly in the field. My old man stuck with his 458. as his back up gun and gave me the 500 to trade for something else. The thing about this gun that was especially bad was the fact that it used the enfield action. They are not exactly nown for great accuracy and they have some weird features like a cock on close action. Here is a link to the gun I am talking about http://www.a-squarecompany.com/

H&K makes a good piece as does Sig. I dont care for glocks and their cloans.
This is my favorite though for personal protection. Good ol 1911, 45. ACP. Anybody who breaks into my home will get a fist full of steel and a bunch of 230 gr pieces of lead and copper flying their way.

Ben ;
From your picture it looks llike the 45 comes to hand before the book it is sitting upon. In the scenario you paint probably the correct order of operation! Lol.

The good book keeps the gun up off the bottom of the drawer so its easy to grasp. Both the good book and the gun get regular use.

That's insane! The muzzle break is the only thing that makes them manageable.
I dont like muzzle breaks. 9 times out of 10 people flinch from the noise anyway. Besides there is nothing wrong with shooting a caliber like the 30-06. Little kick and with the right bullets is very capable of killing anything on this continent and most others.

I prefer 1911's and Glocks. SIG and H&K are of impeccable quality, reliability, and accuracy...but for me, far from ideal ergonomics. I do not like the DA first pull (or having 2 different pulls, really) on an auto-loading pistol. Here the 1911 (after tuning) and Glock (which I find very reliable) excel for me personally, with shorter length of pull, low bore axis, and safety systems designed for fighting, not satisfying lawyers. I have discovered these personal preferences and limitations through much hands-on defensive scenario training. Again, just what works best for me. Given parameters for, say, target shooting, and the tools might change accordingly.

Oh, so I am not too embroiled in this off-topic-fest, I run BOTH Husky, Stihl, & others:

Husq 346xp (a tiny tornado), 372xp (a hot rod), and the 262xp (my all time fave!)

Stihl 200T (a gem arborist's tool), 026 (super power/weight saw), 034 (classic), 038M (a freakin' tank), 044M (nice reliable saw), 066M (a beast) and a near-dead 028

Shindaiwa 488 (some year it will finally break in)

Efco 981 (nice Gilardoni jug sound to it)

Echo 340 (best buy)

Jonsered 2149, 2165 (they're red, anyway)

definitely others not coming to mind, and many before

Nothing listed above has been a disappointment.
