Husqvarna 272 Cutoff Saw vs 272XP Chainsaw

Other than the obvoius, what are the differences between a 272XP chainsaw and the 272 cutoff saw?

Could the cut off saw could be converted to a chainsaw?

There are more things different than there are the same.
I don't think it is worth the time or cost to convert it.

Even the engine is different - at least the porting.

The cutoff saw has less max power, at lower rpms, and a wider powerband, I believe.

Actually by the IPL's that is the one of the few things that is the same. crank,piston.cylinder. The crankcase halves however carry a different part number as doe's almost every other part

Not to further rain on anyone else's parade, those things generally have a shorter life expectancy than a chainsaw... the reason? Fine concrete dust eats up the bottom end as well as the top end. The good ones have good filtration systems, but once you find one that is fairly "rebuildable" it has more than just compression problems. It would still make a fun project, though.

Yes I am going to rain on the parade.
First ? what is your reasoning in trying to convert a cutoff saw to a chainsaw?
There are a number of differences in the cutoff saw!
1. The clutch side of crankcase is machined away for the v-belt, & will not
work as an oil reservoir.
2. There is no oiler assy on the cutoff saw.
3. The ignition and flywheel are different.
4. Crankshafts are different 272XP 503 6133-71 272K 503 6133-72.
5. Piston & Cyl. are different 272XP 503 7581-71 272K 506 2601-71
6. Carburetors are different 272XP HS260S 272K HS255B (governed)
As you can see there are to many differences for this to be feasible! JMEO:deadhorse:

Interesting because the 2 printed ipl's that I have show
Crankshaft 501 52 84 04 for both 272XP and 272K
piston and cylinder 503 75 81 71 for both as well
Of course mine are older IPL's and they may have made changes in later years but they were at least at one time sharing these parts

GREG: Yes you are probably correct they may of shared these same parts early on, but they did change, and the part#'s I listed are the updated part#'s.
I am apologize if I confused anyone, I was only trying to give the correct part#'s and stipulate that they were different.

Thanks for the input guys. I was not familiar with cutoff saws, so naturally, when I saw one in the junk heap at my local dealer, my mind started to ramble, being the 272 as popular as it is.
