Could anybody tell me if it is worth it to do A muffler mod on my 359, it is only 3 months old and I only cut fire wood, 10 to 15 truck loads per year, also should I use the stock husky chains or upgrade to the woodsman pro full chisel, I have always used everything stock but if it is going to make a big difference I would do it. any other advice will be appreciated.

Yes, do a mod. Even better would be to ditch the cat muffler and pick up a non-cat one and then mod it. You might want to consider having a woods porting done on your 359 for even more grunt.I use the Woodman Pro semi chisel since I am cutting all sorts of stuff and it holds up well for me. By full chisel I presume you are refering to round chisel? Try the Woodsman Pro RC chain. Husky branded chain is made by Oregon. Woodsman Pro is made by Charlton for Bailey's.:chainsaw:

the stock 359 catted muffler sucks big time... There is a lot to be gained from modding the muffler. There is also a ton of power in that saw if you decide to have it modded. There is a really good builder in MI.

here is a muffler that Dave Neiger worked his magic on

mod

The muffler mod is well worth the work.Just type in muffler mods in search on this site. You will gain at least 20% HP.You will have to reset the carb though.Because after the mod it will run lean.Run it lean and you will burn it up.(Use a tach)As far as chains full round chisel will cut faster. But if you are in dirty wood it will dull faster.Woodsmanpro from Bailey's works for me.Oregon 72lp is second.Unfortunately I had to sell my 359.

will changing to a non cat muffler with the mod make the saw less reliable, are there any drawbacks other than it will void the warrenty.

The muffler mod will make the machine MORE reliable, because it will not
run as hot. Take 314E's advise and reset the carb a little rich. I did nothing
else to mine except the muffler change out and the carb adjustment, and the differance is easily noticeble. Good luck.

A full on woodsport turns this saw into a mini 372. They really respond well to a massage. A true "sleeper". I love mine

Mini 372 easy,

I would put mine against a bone stock 7 pin 066 in reasonable sized wood. Do a muffler mod and a good port job and the 359 will cut twice as fast as it did out of the box. Carb caps will need to be cliped and richened, idel will need to be backed down. Two 5/8 or 3/4 inch tubes wake the 359 up.

What chain model and pitch are we talking about???

If that Husky chain is H42 (Oregon 73LP), I doubt if the Carlton chain will be an upgrade....

Then I still don't believe the Carlton will be an improvement, but there is nothing wrong with giving it a try....

...also try Stihl 33RSC - it may be the best option.:blob2: :blob2:

I got my 359 a couple years ago . .before that I had a Super XL Auto out of the 70's . .it cleared land . .cut trees for the beam and timber house and firewood. I sold it soon after I bought the 359 . .still running good. I upgraded because the vibration was making my hands go numb. I recently did the Muffler Mod to the 359...I would like to thank all those that have shared ideas and figures for doing that . .I did my mod just slight different and thought I would share a pic of it so that it might be added to the ideas. It started with 2 pieces of 3/4" x 1 3/4" x1/8" steel stock . .after I laid out the lines for holes and such I clamped the pieces together and drilled the holes .. .The reason for 2 is that the top piece is bolted to the weldon . .so that the spark arrestor screen can be placed between the pieces(the screen hasn't arrived yet) . .the opening is 2) 3/8" hole drilled at 3/4" space . .and then the stock between the holes was cut out with a dremel tool . .so it is about the same area as others have done to their 359's. Inside I drilled 2) 1/2" holes and then cut out the stock between by forcing the metal into the side of the drill ..so that opening is slightly bigger than the exit opening . .Again my thanks to all that have share on this topic

Welcome Rodauthor. The 359 is a popular saw here. It seems most folks have the E-Tech version with the catalytic muffler. How did your pre E-Tech run after your muffler mod?:chainsaw:

New here - howdy to all

I'm still searching the site trying to find this info, but where can I purchase the non-cat muffler for the 359? Thanks in advance...
