Husqvarna 390 Recoil Starter Woes

I rebuilt a Husqvarna 390XP. The starter worked as it should before the rebuild. I put the starter on and the rope won’t retract with it on the saw. I have tried a complete new oem recoil starter and it didn’t change anything. The pawls on the starter spring back and forth as they should. I’ve tried tapping on the crank and it didn’t help. You can rewind the rope by turning the clutch. So it isn’t releasing from the flywheel . I don’t know what else to try. I don’t see anything wrong with the flywheel. I’ve tried oiling everything too. What flywheel nut do you have on the flywheel? Sometimes if you've used a flywheel nut and washer from a different application, it can interfere with the starter. Also check to see if one of the pawls is bent.

Make sure the paws on the flywheel installed in the correct orientation. Is the flywheel seated on the crank properly? If you've tried more than one recoil cover it has to be something with the flywheel.

Had same problem on clone 372. Used to work then quit working. U gotta pull you cord out a lil as ur putting it on you saw so the pawls line up correct. Give a few short tugs as your placing it on the saw you’ll find that sweet spot.

Had same problem on clone 372. Used to work then quit working. U gotta pull you cord out a lil as ur putting it on you saw so the pawls line up correct. Give a few short tugs as your placing it on the saw you’ll find that sweet spot.

Though that was obvious. Yeah you need to pull the cord a little to allow the starter to seat, or you you could bind things up.

I have not removed the paws from the flywheel. I’ll post a picture of the flywheel.

I’m pretty sure it’s the one that came on the saw. I’ve tried it with and without the washer and it didn’t make a difference. I’ll post a picture.

Correct rewind, check part number, center screw tight, fiddled with it shifting it around while pulling and releasing pull cord? Coil tight and air conductor in correct position? 537003871

i Honestly put a light grind to the edges of the China recoil. Shouldn’t have that issue OEM though. PB Blast it.

Did you loose the little collar washer that goes between the recoil housing and the chain brake handle?
