Hey there. My grandfather passed away I I got what I asked for his old 42. It’s not much but special. We worked on the Xmas trees snigging for him behind the old 42 and he made us work. It ran but not good so I tore it down. I think I need a cylinder and piston but I can’t find one . I’d rather have stock than cheap aftermarket unless there is a great quality company that is making parts reliable for work. Local dealer came up with nothing for me. I got some pictures. I hope someone can help. It means a lot to me the old saw. Thanks because the ole girl means a lot to me

I have a 42 that is not in use after the tank-handle leaked, ignited, and melted. The saw didn't feel or respond like it had any issues. I bought it used and put at least 30 tanks through it brushing and bucking rounds.

I'd sell it to you, but shipping might be a bear. Top end should be good.
 
Can you get a better pic of the exhaust side of inside the cylinder...
Looks to me like that would clean up ok & then drop a meteor piston in it (assuming they're available)

Yeah, that looks like it would clean up just fine. Make a mandrel by cutting a slot in the end of a bit of rod, a dowel, or even an old screw driver. Slot a length of 240 ish grit sand paper in the end, wrap it round, throw it in the drill, & buff away. Finish up with a course scotch pad in the same way.
Make sure you remove all that crusty carbon from the exhaust port & vac/pressure test it when it's back together
 
I would give that cylinder a good go at cleaning it up, I have cleaned up much worse many times. There are video`s using flap wheels that make the cleanup much faster but even hand sanding will take a bit longer but give good results.
What about a piston and ring? Will I need oversize? I’ve never done this. Is there a aftermarket high quality piston , cylinder and bearings and seals? It was gramps of I wouldn’t bother

If it cleans up nice and smooth then just a standard size piston and rings will fit correctly, chainsaw cylinders are plated with a few different very hard,long wearing material, some had chrome lined bores others have nicasil lining so there is no boring out of these cylinders to get oversized pistons for them, that all went away when the cast iron sleeved cylinders were done away with many long years ago. As far as aftermarket goes you just take your chances, luck of the draw. Sometimes you win other times you don`t, one set may work ok and last a bit while the next go round is junk right off,only someone with plenty of rebuild experience can usually tell from just looking the AM part over before install.
