See one for sale locally for $135. Is that a fair deal? Smoking deal? No deal? Assuming it runs and isnt packed solid with creeping crud.

Already have a 350 and seems like this is nearly the same saw. Not even sure why I looked.

If it's in decent shape, that's a good deal.

I fixed up and cleaned up some Poulans for near nothing. I suppose I could sell those and put this saw in the shed for same money. I'll check out the 55. Thanks.

I've had scores of the box-store level Poulans dropped off here for repair. I blow them off with the air gun, remove the bar and chain, then "tink" the rest off the dumpster outside the shop. That's the BEST sound they will ever make!

Seriously, Husky 55's came in many flavors. They even made a close P/C version for a while. They will have decompression and +++++ along the bottom of the cylinder visible from the right side. Excellent saw and very well built and really cool if you can find a closed port P/C version in good shape..........

Is there an outward indication of a closed port saw vs open? Difference in transfer port covers perhaps?

I got the Poulans to play and learn. There is no way they're worth any shop labor rates to repair. What I did learn in abundance is that they aren't worth much. But I hardly pay anything for them. Gave one to a neighbor who had only a battery saw. For a homeowner who is on the light side of even that category I guess they'll serve well enough (except those people seem inclined to leave them full of old gas, run dull chains, not clean air cleaners, pack clutch full of oily dust, etc.). I don't agree they are worthless. For some people a clean running used Poulan may be the fanciest tool they can afford.

The most obvious way is the pic and description in post #5, just not the best pic. The +++++ is on the top of the transfer bulge just under the decomp.
There are no transfer covers either way as on a 350 but there is the typical difference in shape, hard to see on a complete saw though.
Another possible outward difference is the epa tag on the top cover will say 51cc instead of 53cc but covers are often swapped.

Here's a clearer shot;

I have one cyl that has 3 +s and is open port.
This could be tuff to recognize when the saw is complete and dirty.
I'd be more concerned if the p and c are in good condition than if cp or op.
I run both, they cut wood.
I agree with many flavors.

I've owned halve a dozen over the years and a couple of 51's. Also have a mint condition 50 Special with only a couple of tanks of fuel been thru it.. Not sure why I'm saving it, inherited from my brother in law after he passed back in 2005.

The open port versions have a broad/flat/smooth power curve and nothing at all wrong with them. The CP models have excellent upper mid-range and top end power in comparison. I've never thought any of them were lacking anyplace for the CC's.........

Got my new prize home. There is some good and some bad. Wasnt figuring to get it when I left the house, but figured I didn't have pressing plans so took the drive. But didn't even take a scrench.

Saw was cold and fired right up on three pulls. Oil tank was dry as a popcorn fart, which had me concerned but not enough to run away. Chain was slightly rusty, supporting my hypothesis that there may an oiling issue lurking. Bar is scorched on one side, YUGE burrs and concave near the saw. I have a good bar from my 350 so still in business.

Clutch cover shows a curious circle. Brake band is scorched and ground. Maybe didn't understand how a brake works?

Sure doesnt look like oil has been flowing like wine, does it?

Has the comp release mod where the pros handle the head downward and away from the hoop for quicker actuation. Like an extended slide release on a 1911. Right? Or maybe it's just bent. Still works and the metal stem seems straight.

Has the expected amount of crud under recoil cover. This guy was an occasional saw user. Probably never cleaned it once.

You know what's irresistible when you see a funky burned brake band? To actuate the brake with the cover off the saw. Help a near-tard untard his situation please?

Pistol looks new. Some disappointments but fundamentally seems like a saw with a lot of life left in it. And has closed ports, which really blows up my skirt for some reason I dont understand, except that I can brag about it on the innerwebz.
