Oooo. I am not an expert but I think the orange ones are the newest and similar to the greys. What year was it made? Also, someone here must know if that is the one that accepts the aftermarket 272 covers on ebay. They have the idle adjust hole.
The difference is the one piece vs. Two piece ignition. The early two piece ignition saws will not accept a 268/272 top cover because the front screw hole is in a different location. The later one piece ignition saws the top covers will fit.

You know you can get the year from the first digit of the serial number? And some in that era had the full year spelled out. [Edit: 1983, for instance.]I want to say this one is a early 80's saw. Like 80-81 I believe. Its was bought just after my dad bought his 2100?
I believe I looked at this and decided it could be done, but not simply.Ah OK. Can you modify the cover to make it work?
i've done swaps on four different saws of this platform, two 61's a 66 and a j-red 625II, the one i like best so far is one of the 61's, i used a closed port 268 mahle jug with a 266 pop up piston with caber ring, deleted the base gasket, slight MM.......this saw runs very wellView attachment 463003
i'd have to look, i did this one two years ago......Which carburetor?
Correct. I drilled and tapped a new hole in my 61 chassis to accept the 272 cover. The difference is the one piece vs. Two piece ignition. I never had a 272 cover, so I ask, is there plenty of thickness there to accept that hole? No challenges? Could you show a photo?Correct. I drilled and tapped a new hole in my 61 chassis to accept the 272 cover.
Yeah, I'd like to see it too. I thought the rail would be too narrowI never had a 272 cover, so I ask, is there plenty of thickness there to accept that hole? No challenges? Could you show a photo?
I have a 2 piece ignition white top rancher that I though about a 272 conversion but instead put a used 162 cylinder w new metor piston on it and it runs real nice. The 162 is a closed port cylinder and has what looked to me larger porting. I used a aftermarket 272 muffler because I was missing the muffler for both saws...stats well idles real nice and has a nice tone in the cut.....
