First off, I am new to this site, and am very impressed with how many people are here talking about saws (old and new), and willing to help people in need of information on them. I have been running saws for a few years, but they are really becoming a full time hobby for me. I am getting addicted to them. Anyway on to my question.

I picked up a Husqvarna 61 from my brother-in-law and am trying to figure out the date of manufacture. The serial number is 5143266. It is all orange and has a metal chain brake. After researching it I believe it is a 1995, but from the pictures I have seen of the 95's they have a plastic chain brake. I don't know if someone changed the top cover or not. All I am definite about is the fact it's driving me crazy. I deciphered my Homelite Super XL Auto in about 10 minutes on here and can't figure this out. I don't have any pics of it yet but will post when I do. Thanks everyone in advance.

1985 would be my guess:clap:

Here are some photos. I apologize for the low quality but it's all I have to work with. I just got the saw and haven't had a chance to really clean it up the way it should be.

I really wasn't sure, The was going off the color of the top cover, and I read online that the 61's had a white cover in the seventies, gray/black cover in the eighties and orange covers in the nineties. I tried to take a pic of the serial number plate but it wouldn't turn out. The plate is silver with the numbers stamped into it. It also says that it was made by Electrolux. I am also unsure when Electrolux bought and sold Husqvarna.

If the "silver" plate doesn't have a reference to TOMOS and/or Slovenia on it, the saw was made 1985 week 14. The top cover has been replaced at some point, but the rest of the appearance fits with that dating (as far as I know).

Thank you all for all the help with this. Does anyone know where I can find some good detailed pics of an '85 so I can figure out what I need to do to make the saw correct? I am new here and haven't searched everything yet. Thank you all again.

Dave

Looks like an '85 to me also. My '81 and '83 Husky 61's both have white tops. You can also look underneath the top cover or shroud and find the date code of manufacture for that piece. You know that wheel look'n thing with dots and numbers that is molded into parts as a date identifier. It should be somewhere from about 6months or so before the serial number date on the saw tag. If it's after april of 1985 then for sure the cover has been replaced.
Also check over at chain saw collector corner as they have an excellent data base of saw info.

Good luck. Stay safe.

As far as I can see, you only need one of the white top covers - but I wouldn't have bothered. The top cover changed to dark gray later in 1985, but was white early in the year (according to the IPLs).

Here's a 1984 61. 165psi and a very good runner.

It's an 85..... and I may be all wet here but judging from the what I can tell from the pics, the top cover is not orange but a gray one painted orange. What color is it inside?? If it's an orange cover it will be orange plastic all the way through...if it's a gray cover, then it will be gray on the inside and same thing for white as well. It looks to me that there is gray showing through where it is scratched....again, I may be wrong but that's how it appears to me. All these top covers are solid color all the way through and a scratch just reveals more of the same color...

I will have to look at it closer when I get home, but I know it is orange on both sides.

ft.churchill, thanks for the information on chin saw collector corner, I spent three hours on their site last night.

Thank you!

Thank you!

Perhaps..you have eyes on it not me...make sure if it is orange inside that it isn't simply painted as well.

Sure looks like paint chipped off around the hold down screw pockets where a skrench knocked the paint off and on the top rear corners too...

Well I thought both sides of the top cover were orange. A little closer look and you guys were right, the paint is chipping off of the originally black cover. I still don't know if this is the original cover though.

Husqvarna Rancher 61 Identify

Hi and thanks for any and all help,

I have inherited my dads Husqvarna Rancher 61 with a 24" bar. We are all pretty sure it was labeled as a 61 which had worn away decades ago. The Silver I.D. Tag reads 1984 013785 which is attached by the oil tank cap. It also has a white cover on top.

I have been researching this saw for the purpose of getting parts to make it run again. I have been under the impression that it is a (Rancher 61 1984-01) and have been trying to find parts with that information. Is this correct? Huskys tagging system seems difficult to understand.

Oddly enough when I added some Fuel mix, I was able to get it started and it ran like the beast I remembered as a child. It only ran upon giving it full throttle though and died when I let off the throttle. So I started cleaning it up and tearing it down. I quickly found the main problem. The fuel line was so rotten that when I tried to pull it out of the tank with needle nose pliers it just fell apart. After a half hour of swishing and picking I finally got that tank clean. Needless to say I was very surprised that the saw ran at all. I also put a compression tester on it, cold compression was 155psi.

Has any one done any Mods or upgrades to the fuel line to keep this from happening again? I have heard that Husqvarna's Fuel lines are susceptible to this after a couple of years.

I also was wondering if anyone new about the Walbro fuel pump Diaphragm should be replaced. Is it just good practice after a decade or two. Or do these parts just work well until they fail. I know that pulling one screw to get at the diaphragm pump and making sure the passages and screen filter are clear and clean is a breeze. Which mine were nice and clean.

Any easy way to adjust the oiler? I feel it is over oiling and I may want to turn it down after I get it running and monitor fuel to oil ratio consumption.

The clutch sprocket definatley has wear. The indentation of the chain is quite deep. I would like to replace that and the bar but with no work in the last 18 months it looks as if I will run this til the sprocket goes BLAM! I do remember cutting a lot of wood with my dad to keep warm for the winter. Those were hard good memories with my dad as we spent time together. I wonder where the work ethic and fatherly bonding for our kids are now?

Thanks again for any help and answers.

I replaced the spur sprocket on one of my 61s (the 1978 white top one) with a new spur sprocket from Baileys. For the same money I could have converted to Oregon drum and rim sprocket now, then would only have to replace a 6 dollar rim from now on. That is what I am doing with the 1987 model 61. My long term plans. I sure love those 61s.
