I blame you people for this! Stihl 051AV

Well a few weeks ago I purchased an old 044 Stihl. I have had a chance to use it and all I can say about it is WOW! I have since been spending endless hours on here reading all I can about any Stihl saws and I kept finding myself searching local Craigslist adds for any "good deals" that could be had. Well yesterday was the day. I got on and found a local guy selling a old 051AV. I sent him an email or two this morning and within the hour I was driving home with a decent looking non-running 051 for what I feel like was a decent price. I got it home and pulled the spark plug and it spins freely. I removed the gas cap and found it about half full of gas, NOT GOOD! I poured the gas out and found a nice layer of sludge in the bottom of the tank. The fuel line inside looks and feels like a gummy worm some kid dropped on the sidwalk on a 100 degree day. I pulled the carb and found the impulse and fuel line fittings totally blocked with, well, fuel line. I pulled the muffler and the cylinder and piston look awesome! I guess I will start with a carb kit, new lines and go from there. Thanks to you guys I now have something else to spend my hard earned money on!:biggrin:

Usually fuel lines and a carb kit will get most non runners up and going be sure to check for bearing play on the crank. That is a nice clean saw.:msp_thumbsup:

Great find. You'll enjoy running it. It's not the fastest saw out there but nothing beats having low end torque to pull a 36" bar.

Thats a pretty early model too. even has the old school stihl bar om it. nice find

Your Welcome! Now go find a 056MagII as it is one of the best saws Stihl ever made, and will out perform both the 051 and the 044.

Thanks for the encouragment on the new project. I have been tearing it down and fixing the obvious and I have found something pretty major I think. Can you spot whats wrong here? This is what it looks like when I removed clutch washer. Looks like someone did some parts changing at some point and didnt pay close attention.

I found a link on here from 2008 where another guy was dealing with the exact same issue but he never posted a conclusion. I need to swing by the dealer to try to get some parts for this thing so I am gonna start there and see what I can find out about this.

Looks like the wrong seal to me. I can see the bearing through there. Either that or the wrong worm?

Checking your dealer first is a good move IMO. I found alot of gaskets for my 75 there for pennies compared to what they wanted for them on Ebay. I have a pile of 051/075 parts if you need anything let me know and I'll check my inventory.

You got it. I actually think its the wrong pump drive since the worm gear wont engage the pump. I know there were two different variations of the drive on these saws. The early ones were three small pins that went into the sprocket and then there was this, two lugs that engaged the sproket. I cant wait to head in to the dealer and explain this one to them. I see this getting good quick.

Yea that worm is the one found on the 075 and maybe some of the very first 051s. I think someone had ordered the wrong replacments for yours. The later 051 uses the other setup, I'm pretty sure.

Thanks guys. I called and talked to the gentleman in the link that was given. He was very helpful. I have emailed him some pictures of the issue with the dimensions and am waiting to hear back from him in the morning. I will see what he says and go from there.

I picked up a carb kit and some fuel line from the dealer today but no luck on the correct oil pump drive worm gear. I am almost out of options after I didnt hear back from the sight sponsor yesterday. I hate to start buying stuff off ebay not knowing if its the right stuff or not. I dont know what to do about that. I need someone with a chainsaw junk yard!

Just an update. I want to publicly thank everyone here for all the ecouragement and help on this project. I would like to thank Jockeyduece, Germanoak and Glock37 for going above and beyond to help me as well. I think I have sourced the correct oil pump worm and everything else I will need to convert it back to the original style oil pump drive and get this thing running again. Man I cant wait to see what she will do! In the mean time I still find myself surfing Craigslist in search of another big saw. I want something in the 110cc+ range now!

I have an 075 I can sell you. Runs great. Rough in appearance. Needs carb work. And that's 111cc.

It would be a bit of a project saw, since it needs some carb work. But if you feel the love, I feel the need to clear some space in my shop.
