I have to say it again, THANK YOU JOCKEYDUCE! He hooked me up with exactly what I needed for the old 051 and after about 30 minutes of putting it back together with the parts he supplied, ITS ALIVE! I havent done anything to the carb aside from take it apart and clean the obvious junk out of it but I dumped some gas in it, flipped the choke and after about 5 good pulls, it fired up and idled like it was brand new. The only thing I have noticed so far is man does she smoke! I guess thats the residue of the sludge in the crank case being burned out? The crank case was full of this thick oil that I had to pour out of it litterally. Man it felt so good to hear it come to life. Now I am gonna get the carb gone through the right way, strip it down and clean it up for sand blasting and paint, get a new bar and chain for it and take it out and let it eat some wood! Thank you again for all the help from everyone.

Check out the smoke! Oh yeah, Im gonna need a kill switch as well.

The 051 has a tendency to leak bar oil into the crankcase if the o-ring goes bad on the oil pump. It is possible that is where the smoke is coming from. Tom

Thanks Tom. I read a little into that and I filled mine with bar oil and the level never dropped but it may have been just enough to cause this. The sludge that I found in the crankcase was the same stuff that was in the gas tank. I will look into it a little further and see if that bar oil is getting into there or not. Thanks again.

I aint even gonna tear it down and look, Im just gonna go ahead and start trying to find the seals for the oil pump. Thanks again.

Time to bring this thread back to life. I have been so busy with real work I haven't had a lot of saw time. On the bar oil issue, I have found that the saw gets bar oil in the crank case when I let it sit. I can start it up and it smokes like crazy but clears up. Shut it off and let it sit again and when you fire it back up it smokes for a minute or two. I know that everyone says the oil pump O-rings will cause this but is the oil pump below the oil level in the tank? Is it possible that the crank case gasket is leaking causing this? I sure don't want to tear this thing down that far. Aside from the smoke it runs great! You cant stall the 404 chain no matter how much you try.

In fairness rebuilding the 051/075/076 saws are straight forward and you can still get pretty much all the spares still.
As said chances are it will be the little o ring and that will sort it out. It will only get worse with time. Whilst at it replace the bigger rabbit ear seal on the top of the pump but beware when you order as like the pumps there are 2 different types.

Had somehow missed this thread when first posted but that is the original stihl seal on the the crank in the earlier pics. Don't know why but they used such a colour.

Thanks guys. I will just snag one of the new style oil pumps on ebay. Mine has the 12 toothdrive if my memory is right.
