I am beginning to think I am jinxed when it comes to climbing shagbark hickories. If something is going to go wrong for me, it happens in a shagbark hickory, Fortunately, it is never anything major, just annoying stuff-having to reclimb because I can't pull my climbing line through a crotch that is too tight, getting my throwball stuck, nicking my lanyard with my silky, ripping my earmuff off my helmet, etc-it only happens in a shagbark. And yesterday was no exception. First removal of the day was a shagbark. I tied my lowering line to the first branch to be removed and went to swing back to the trunk. But my front pocket of my jeans got caught on a branch and when I swung, it ripped the leg of my jeans right down to the knee. No problem, I always keep an extra set of clothes in the truck so I was soon back to work. Not a half hour later, I somehow got my jeans caught on a stub and ripped a huge chunk of material right out of the crotch (still not sure how I did this since I was sitting in my saddle at the time.) Anyway, I figure i'm screwed now, might as well just finish the job. But of course, the hole kept getting caught on everything and just getting bigger. By now my groundies and the homeowner are rolling on the ground (so much for trying to look professional.) Soon, the hole is big enough that I'm getting my shorts caught on limbs and I'm starting to worry about indecent exposure (the homeowner had by this time called out his wife to watch what was happening.) Suddenly the first pair of jeans weren't looking so bad, so I came down, duct taped the leg, and finished the job. After I got done, the homeowners thanked me profusely for the entertainment and we just laughed it off. BUT I STILL HATE SHAGBARK HICKORIES
