I just started working for a tree service and love it but we dont have tons of work to do what is the best way I can get my boss some work so I can work? I've already put an add on cl. Any other ideas?

I spent many Thursday nights in Greensburg delivering cheese in the old days. I love that part of the state. People would actually wave at me in my truck when I went through Rushville. Not many places in the country that would happen.
I wish you well,
Phil

knock doors, simple as that ,stay away from the no soliciting doors though

simply say "stopped by to see if you had any tree work you would like done"

get them in the yard point stuff out, would help to know a lil bit bout the whole process of getting it down ,puts them at ease

Many times i have thought about this when I see obvious work that needs to be done........but if the clients are internet minded they will see the ISA and the likes warning that this is the classic sign of a hack job or scammer. It could go either way with this approach and you could end up with a reputation as Johhny go lucky with a chainsaw, even if undeserved. TCIA puts out similar consumer information warnings.

ISA and TCIA are good, but they don't have any love for people who don't pay some kind of dues to them in their consumer literature. Don't get me wrong, I am a member of the ISA and not for marketing reasons..... I am a member for self improvement and recent peer reviewed literature.

I just thought that if you do consider doing this you should know that it's a gamble.

Welcome to the fun and thrill filled world of tree work! I do it for the rewarding feeling of a job well done and for the never ending struggle with idiots who think you should just show up with your saw and put a tree on the ground for 25 dollars.

are you kidding ,ALOT of people and i mean ALOT do this just to add extra work, one including partlows, look it up in culpeper VA

he pays my cousin 20% of each job, to go knock doors and line extra work up

many people in my town got started this way ,sure there are scammers etc ,but a good few make a helluva living this way in NOVA,DC ,maryland,i used to knock doors/hand out cards and had no trouble ,but i always got money when th job is FINiSHED,there are people out ther that ask for half up front

Just make sure you dont get your testicles bitten off by a pitbull or something.. as I hear that can be dangerous business.

Putting out flyers has been way more productive for me than door knocking... At least in this day and age...

Welcome to the game. ;)

I'm just telling you what they say (ISA / TCIA) so that an informed decision can be made. Here is an example of what i mean, this is from a WV Paper and is heavily influenced by what is now the TCIA ......

"Legitimate tree service businesses rarely go door to door to solicit business.”

I have on a few occasions walked up to a place and let them know some work should be done and why it is so, but I always fear they will read something like this and label me. Especially since I don't do a yellow pages ad either (waste of money it seems with my Family's previous bus. once the internet became big). And for the record, I have no problem with door-to-door salesmanship. I'm all about feeding the kids.

Idk, if I will go door to door but I know I do want to work!

I personally do not go door to door. It is not beyond me to stop and talk to someone about a dead tree though. If I see someone out working in their yard while I am working the neighborhood and they have an obvious need for tree work I will sometimes stop. You're not going to get near the prices from soliciting as you will if they call you though. I will place flyers on mailboxes door to door... err... I used to. Haven't done so in over three years but I usually got decent results doing so.

Sounds to me like you need to talk to your boss about a finders fee for any leads you bring him and get yourself an advertising plan together.

You started this thread with a wow and excitement about getting a job. Then you said you need to line up work for your Boss to work you so you could get paid. Now this last post sounds the most confusing from the first. Seems to me you should try to look into hiring on with a legit company. I guess it depends on where you live and the type of clients, door knocking will maybe work, but only crap jobs at dirt prices. Thats when you dont need credentials. Make a reputation with credentials and build a client base. Or get a real job.
Jeff :)

seems like a bunch of crap to me ,so say a lil girl comes up to sell cookies should you kick her off the property and say only real cookies are sold in grocery stores !!?

we have credentials .etc ....and i know alot of tree guys that dont have credentials but still do VERY good work

just because somone has a huge business with huge trucks and equipment doesntmean they cant drop a top through your house i mean look a nosak(saw for hire) ....the chances they take are outstanding

this can go on all day

Sounds good!

I don't respond to door knockers, they barely get their first sentence out before the door is closed with a curt "No thanks". I suspect most people in my area respond the same. So, it's not worth the effort. I think you would do better with flyers and pamphlets.

I treat telemarketers worse. I just hang up as soon as I figure out what they are. I'm not being polite on purpose.

Do some volunteer work at a local school or church and publicize it.

Get known for preserving trees, and not just cutting them down.

Learn about biology. Pass the certified tree worker test. Promote certification.

Door knocking puts you in a race to the bottom. :censored:
