so i suppose you slam doors on kids trying to earn extra money mowing grass as well, cause people wth big compainies "do it better and faster"

thats whats wrong now people dont give people the benefit of the doubt, just slam a door and think they are ripoffs, when in reality they are trying to eat /feed there families.....doesnt hurt a dam thing to at least hear them out,if you dont like how they operate then say no thanks

truth is mistakes happen,i dont care how safe you are, when we went to get a licsense a long while back in VA we were told we didnt need one as long as we didnt work in maryland ,and what does a licsense prove ? tha you can pay for the thing?.....i dont care what kinda schooling you have or what tests you have taken, its not gonna replace experience....,putting all people in one catagory that knock doors is ignorant....if you dont know how to go out and GET work then i understand why you guys put it down

have to be honest some people on here just sound like biggets and know it alls

Make flyers, put em in mailboxes. Another thing ive done with success in the past is literally drive by a house, see potential work ( dead wood, hangers, etc) and write a estimate for the job and leave that in the mailbox.

Yeah I would not let a kid mow my grass. I would be responsible if anything happened. No, I will not buy cookies from kids unless they are Girl Scout cookies that the kid did not make and try to sell. You sound "anti-Professional", is it because you are not a professional? You sound ignorant. :) You spelled Biggots wrong.

Putting fliers in mail boxes is a no no. People don't want folks screwing with their mail. Too much identity theft and other kinds of thievery going on these days. It is OK to put them on the mailbox but not in it. Besides, putting unposted advertisements in the mail box without the proper postage is illegal. If you pass out fliers you want to be clean cut and look like you are in the neighborhood to do business. Not like the local thugs casing joints to rob. Smile and talk to people that you meet. Let them know what you are doing in their neighborhood.

If you think the tree service is anything like a lemonade stand, its gonna be a tough road.. just sayin

If you open someones mailbox here, could be trouble, unless you are a postal carrier or the owner of the mailbox.
Jeff :)

If you open one anywhere in the country (you dont own or have rights too) you could be in trouble... Its a federal law.

When I first started I was enlightened to this fact.

Door hangers are a much better option if you wanna go that route.. mine started with something like "thought about your trees lately"? followed by a logo, then went on to a brief description of the services we offer underneath that.

Just to make sure folks know where I stand:

When I opened this can of worms I was simply advising the OP that industry organizations that promote tree care do advise consumers that door knockers may potentially be scammers/unqualified. This was provided so the OP would be able to better consider his options with all the relevant info. I personally do not judge things this way, but you must know how clients are educated about your business or you can market yourself in a disastrous way.

Freeweight referenced Culpeper, VA then he must know that there is a stigma related to going door-to-door there recently because of active police investigations into scammer tree companies. There have also been forged insurance certificates with real phone numbers. When a client calls the phone number, an associate of said scamming tree company answers the phone and verifies the insurance, and the scammer is in the door.

My 2 cents

This is an example from the Washington Post, you may have heard of this paper.

of coarse i do ,there are SO SOS SO many tree guys in this lil town its unbelievable, the scammers your referring to are mostly highschool kids or recently graduated or dropped out ,its quick money and alot can get cash

but throwing all door knockers in the same catagory is just wrong

ive been doing this sincei was 13(27 now),seeing how pretty much EVERYONE on my dads side and mothers side has a reputable company(that has credentials) and/or climbs i have seen the bad ones and the good ones, days i wasnt doing anything i would go with friends, and quickly learned not to do that again ....alot of the bad ones are that way because of drugs/alcohol driving them

my dad happens to be one that climbed his way outout of the bottom

to the lemonade thing ,are you trying to act like your adding somthing inteligent ??

im not trying to bust anyones balls but like i said ,if your throwing all door knockers in the same catagory then you have some things to learn...or maybe you already have and see people that have to /want to knock doors as below you in someway.....whatever

so you guys that dont knock doors, what do you do when a huge storm comes through sit and wait?....

Freeweight,

I don't have a problem with door knockers. I was just talking about marketing. Please don't get offended. I can't help it that articles are written and industry associations are saying what they do, but it would be wrong not to inform the OP of these things before he does it. He may decide to go door to door and be very successful as you folks have been. I'm not doubting your family, you, or their credentials.

Have a good 4th.

all i can do is shake my head ,i know a few guys that dont have alot of equipment etc that do great work thats why i was so on edge

but if you accept my apology im sorry

You're not supposed to put them on the mailbox either. We put out some flyers in my area recently for a lost cow and the postmaster called me and said we can't put them in or on the mailbox. I thought it was ok before. If people have a newspaper box you can put it in there.

Well, here there is no problem with putting them on the mailbox. Been doing it many years and have been told by the postal service that it is no problem.

Everyone on this site don't live in the big city. In a rural area door to door sales is still pretty much acceptable. Where I live people will stop by ranches looking to work as a hand. It's perfectly acceptable. I have one area that I work that is about ten miles up the road from me. They have pretty much begged me to come up there and work. They have run two full column, front page stories on my service to try to get me up there to work. No one wants to go out that far and they charge an arm and a leg when they do. Just because you have worked the same city block your whole life don't mean that the rest of the country is that way.

Where does the Post Office get off telling people what can or can not go into mailboxes purchased by private individuals? If they want to be responsible for the acquisition, installation and maintenance of all mailboxes nation wide so be it, but they do not, ergo I'd tell them to shut their yob.
