Where does the Post Office get off telling people what can or can not go into mailboxes purchased by private individuals? If they want to be responsible for the acquisition, installation and maintenance of all mailboxes nation wide so be it, but they do not, ergo I'd tell them to shut their yob.

It is private property, you touch my mailbox, you invade my privacy.
Jeff :)

we got to wherew we would just slide cards in a crack in the wood or somthing like that ,we got a call one time and we explained what we did and they didnt say much

I just started working for a tree service and love it but we dont have tons of work to do what is the best way I can get my boss some work so I can work? I've already put an add on cl. Any other ideas?

Mailboxes aside, talk to real estate agencies. Often, when a home is trying to be sold, the property sometimes needs to be cleaned up for the sale and often that means branches and trees removed. And while the economy is slow and sales aren't through the roof, maintenance is also a big need. Town hall is another good place to drop your name in the building department. Often, people will bring their plans for a new home or addition to get a permit and they will ask for references to local land clearing companies or tree removal companies. Small landscaping companies that don't do removals are another good place to get work. I have a list of small yard maintenance companies that call me for trees and branches that they can't handle themselves. They don't have the equipment or the knowledge of how to.

good luck!

was in a hurry ,basically we put cards on the mail box post,in a crack etc,the post office called one time and we explained it was in,or on the mailbox itself and they didnt have much to say about it or didnt know what to say

Well, here there is no problem with putting them on the mailbox. Been doing it many years and have been told by the postal service that it is no problem.

Everyone on this site don't live in the big city. In a rural area door to door sales is still pretty much acceptable. Where I live people will stop by ranches looking to work as a hand. It's perfectly acceptable. I have one area that I work that is about ten miles up the road from me. They have pretty much begged me to come up there and work. They have run two full column, front page stories on my service to try to get me up there to work. No one wants to go out that far and they charge an arm and a leg when they do. Just because you have worked the same city block your whole life don't mean that the rest of the country is that way.

Easy there bro. I was just saying what the post office called and told me. Maybe you didn't read my post thoroughly. The flier I got this call about was about a lost cow, not tree work. I live in a very rural area like you and I do tree work in about a 50-70 mi. radius as well as having worked in 3 other states. Not quite the same city block.

LOL, I guess that did sound a little harsh. My comments weren't directed at you alone.

I just find it a little irksome when people try to tell others that they are not allowed to go out and look for work. And I understand that too, We have every out of work guy who owns a chainsaw and his brother out there combing the streets for tree work. I hate it too but I still hate it when one guy tells another he can't go out and look for work to support his family.

Personally, I won't do the door to door thing (unless I'm in a storm/disaster situation). I will on occasion stop if I am working close by and talk to someone about a dead tree or storm damaged hangers. I will knock on a door if the HO where I am working says that their neighbor is wanting an estimate.

It's common sense really. Some neighborhoods you know better than to post fliers. Those would be the gated communities, the ones with NO SOLICITING posted and the well to do, snooty neighborhoods. Working class neighborhoods are usually OK to flier and middle class neighborhoods are usually OK too. In rural areas it's usually OK to stop and talk to someone as long as they are not way off the beaten path. Someone living back in the woods is doing so for a reason, they enjoy their privacy.

To tell the truth there are far better ways to advertise than soliciting though. You are never going to get the prices you are looking for when you are going to the potential customer asking them for work. You are going to get far better prices when it is the other way around.

like i saidguys this town was built mostly on TREEGUYS ....bet you could stop some random guy on this street and he will say hes at least pulled brush for one of the companies in this town

now that we have been in advertise'n ,ive gotten lazy at knockin doors for tree service, but fire wood is a different story

No harm done. I agree about door knocking being the wrong way around for me. I'd rather the customer ask me than me go to them. I've got no objection to people doing it though, especially if there is an obvious need for work to be done.
