Hello, I am a student in Ouachita Job Corps. I just completed the Urban Forestry training and now I am in Work Based Learning at Garven Woodland Gardens. I was cut but a chainsaw on the job (the wound didn't damage my leg enough to change my life, it just scared the respect of a chainsaw in me). I was in a tree, doing a removal. The one time I forgot my chaps and it knicked me in the butt (actually in my left knee.? I now stand behind 100% on chainsaw safety. I was wondering if you guys have any good sites or presentations I can read over to help me research for a speech I am going to do for my class . I want all the guys to understand what can happen if you make a mistake with a chainsaw. I was also wondering, is it required by ANSI that we wear chaps in a tree?

If they haven't already, I think it's a matter of time before they mandate chaps while climbing. Frankly I hate chaps but they do work and they sure do help out when working around hawthorns or honey locust.

As far as chainsaw safety, I'm guessing you already know the basics but if not, here goes.

1. Start chainsaw on ground or securely perched when aloft if possible.
2. Watch the upper qaudrant.
3. The only ones I know of are made for right handed people and supposed to be used that way.
4. Use both hands.
5. Use eyewear even with face shield
6. I think decibals are something like 105 and hearing protection is required.
7. Chainsaw operators should be at least 10 feet apart and each should know how the cut will affect the other chainsaw operators limb. Anotherwords don't cut a limb that will cause the other operators saw to pinch or cause him to get hurt.
8.Chain brake should be used anytime one hand if off a running saw or the operator takes more then two steps.

I think the chainsaw operation falls under ANSIZ133 but I thought there was another part that if fell under as well.

Anyway, you probably know all that stuff since it's in most Arborist manuals but threw it out there in case you missed one of them.

I think before you should be able to buy a saw at a store there should be a free of charge operation of use demonstration or atleast a video in the box for that matter.

At a couple hurricane events that I have been to, there is a company called "treejob" teaching homeowners how to use chainsaws in department store parking lots.

..huh dont cut yourself. dont use a chainsaw if you dont know what your doing, or if youv never been shown the proper way to use it.

A few sayings to my newbies are
Two hands on your tool at all times
Chaps Glasses Boots n Muffs or go home
Some people should just not use chain saws, are you this person?
The saws design is to keep control of the sharp cutting bit and safely away from the soft fleshy bits.
Andreas Stihl was right handed.
If you tried to patent and sell a Chain saw today. OH&S would stop you and you would be discriminating left handed people.
Keep it below your waist & never above you head.
Chain brake on between tasks
Put it down and then use both hands to clear the site.
If your looking at girls, your not using your saw.
Natural Laws have no pity.
Auto inertia chain brakes are a must have item
That left hand thumb must be wrapped under the handle
Did you read the manual...What is the German phrase for Chain Brake?

Derwood probably meant above your waist and below your head. All the above is sound advice.

The regulations in Australia say quite simply that ALL tools shall be used in accordance with manufacturers specifications. In my Stihl owners manuals and owners DVD's it says, PPE must be worn AT ALL TIMES when operating a chainsaw. That includes up a tree.

My one and only close call with a saw was prevented from being a major accident by my saw proof pants. Last cut syndrome almost cost me my right leg, instead it cost me a new pair of pants. What a bargain!

roflmao. i remember when u came to the trade cuz u got that cut on your knee. you tried to lie to everyone and say u had ur chaps on. dumbass, chaps may not be required in the tree but ur left handed ass apparently cant operate a chainsaw in one. also tell ron i said hi.

Hey, screw the speech anyway. I mean what are ya gonna say? Chainsaws are dangerous be careful. What for? You need to do a Demo. No bob villa crap though OK? That just fools people into thinking it ain't that hard to chop one down with that purple and green saw.
