I need some help identifying a tree and them some advice on saving them

I have these 2 huge trees in my back yard. I believe they are either black locust or black walnut. Both look pretty bad. I thought they were mostly dead, but when I cut into one I found it to be green almost all the way through. the branches look dead except for the ends. They would be very pretty trees if I could get them to come back. Thanks for the help.

maybe an osage orange?

been told it is an osage orange. I called my county forestry dept, and will have them come out in the spring to evaluate it. I didnt know you could call them for that.
