This was a first for me. I saw a guy park a Bucket truck then walk into a Wendys fast food joint with his gaffs on. I'm not sure how but he was able to walk fairly normal without hitting his spikes on the ground. From what I could tell the spikes looked pretty short and bowed out like a pole gaff and I don't think I saw any kind of protective cover, although I couldn't see them real great. However you could still hear the shank part that goes under the boot clanking on the tile floor. When I walk around with them on I have to tip toe and walk bow legged to keep them from hitting the ground. Does anybody else have or wear gaffs while going into stores and what not without hitting the spikes on the floor? I couldn't tell what brand they were and I'm unfamiliar with a lot of the newer models.

lol thats funny, nothing says hack like living with your spikes on....if their called for they are the first thing to come off when get out of the tree, i hate walkin around with them on i see guys do it all the time..take lunch with them on, never seen em off the job site though.

Never to stores. Sometimes to church and almost always to family gatherings. Some guys are overly impressed with the accoutrements of their profession; to the point of looking like idiots.

gaffs on

years back we had the cables guys laying tv cable around northern IL. come sit with our crew for lunch all with gaffs on never took them off at work, never climbed above phone pole hights, they could not beleve the 3 inch baslin gaffs you can't walk with them, i won't walk 3 feet in them

Doing ice storm work I saw a guy go in to the gas station with a set on. Not nearly as funny as the guy I saw in Wendy's a while back come in wearing his full body fall arrest harness (skin tight mind you) complete with the camo pants. I think he did just to make his junk look bigger.

to me that just seems stupid its only 2 straps to take them off comon it takes me like 20 seconds to take them on and off. why the heck would you want to wear them around. and if your wearing tree gaffs they would hit rocks and stuff dulling the spikes out.

maybe its a new fashion statement? if it is please let me know i want to be on the in crowd i can start wearing mine to the movies and stuff.:newbie:

they work well in a tree but comon walking around they make you walk like forest gump!

Come on, just cause you wear your spikes to lunch don't mean you are a hack.

Quite true. But it might say something about your professionalism.

Of course if they didn't own the company and gear.. they might not care. Although bigger companies would likely have safety policies about wearing them.. and certainly about driving with them on.

Sounds like a social gaffe to me!

I have seen guys walking around The Home Depot, etc., with their knee pads still attached to their legs (usually around their calves or ankles) - I took this as positive sign that the attachment straps were comfortable enough to keep them on rather than taking them off.

Then again, maybe they were just stealing them . . .

I might wander round the jobsite a bit with my gaffs on, but only to grab a smoke or drink before I head back up the next tree. Never on lunch, that sounds uncomfortable, and never in Wendy's.
