hey all,

my 266 which i believe to be an "XP", on the small black serial tag it says "266". i got this saw from a mate who bought it back from Canada. it has the "XP" stickers etc. i think the saw may have been made in 1992??? he bought it at auction

after looking at some other saws (281XP) it had "XP" on the small black serial tag. Did they always put the "XP" on that little black tag or did they start doing it later on???

cheers, serg

Not much difference..

A 266 is a 266, damn good saw! I am not positive but the only difference, I am aware of, is that they spec'ed the XP at 12,000+ RPM's and the non-XP at 9,000+RPM's. Don't take my word for it ... look them up on "Acre's Saw Collecters" site. There might be some other minor difference.

266XP is a great saw, used them for thousands of hours slashing powerlines and juvenile spacing, I liked the ones with the steel brake best but they are all great.

I don't think there ever was a 266 that wasn't either SE/SG or XP/XPG, so the full designation is missing on that plate anyway (there was with the very similar 268 though).
SE and XP meant about the same, but at least the first SEs worked at slightly lower rpms (I don't know when the change was made).

If made in 1992, it should be a xp (xpg if heated handles).

Is the chain brake handle metal or plastic?

yeah, it has a plastic handle.

i had to replace the first plastic handle because i took the spark arrestor off and it melted it

so if the saw only came in xp it wouldn't have it on the black serial tag. i've seen 288xp's that don't have xp on the tag. but like i said i saw 281xp on the black tag of that saw????????

thanks for the info guys,

serg

Melting handle

It's funny you should mention melting the plastic brake off yours. About 7 or 8 months ago I spent $80 on a complete new chain brake assembly for my 266XP. When I picked it up the dealer put it on the saw. You'd think the guy, who also was so kind to tell me that because of a muffler mod the muffler was going to be out of OSHA sound specs..., would have told me I was going to melt off my brand new friggin' brake. Luckily I caught it in time, it damaged it, although not too too bad. Needless to say I was PI55ED at that guy. Anyhoot, they wanted $13 for another deflector so I fabbed my own and it's worked like a champ ever since...

Enjoy your saw bro, I love mine...
