I have seen several small tree limbs in a national forrest surrounding my cabin where it seems small bugs of some type are cutting perfect circles around a limb until it breaks. What in the world is it? I don't have any pics yet, but the limbs are about the size of a pensil and cut as if you put a pipe cutter on it and rotated until more than half way through. Limbs are falling all over the woods in my area. Sound like anything you've seen?

If they're hickory, then they're pecan twig girdlers. Mom lays her eggs on the branch then squiggles back and nips it off so the babes can start the cycle again from the ground up. In yards I tell owners to pick up and bag or burn em to cut down on the numbers next year.
